Why not just take off your ring when the occasion requires it?

I love this thread! I have worn my wedding ring every day since we were married, had it rebuilt by our very own David the JEWELER!!! Never thought of this idea, but I am watching this thread closely, as an alterative is a great idea. My brother was playing basketball with neighborhood friends in a barn up the road once, and while trying to retrieve the ball, caught his ring on a nail, and skinned his finger clean off. I'll never forget his finger in a cup of water in the farmhouse kitchen, him having to have his hand grafted into his abdomen for the whole summer to have a new finger. This was the early 60's, so not a lot of great technology. Thank you for bringing this up! I think I will get a silicone substitute and save my finger for better things in life. Thanks to all the others for the great ideas!! _________________________________________________ "Once abolish the God, and the Government becomes the God." --- G.K. Chesterton

I tried the not wearing a ring route, since I don't wear rings ever, however my fiance has ideas of matching wedding rings (yellow gold band with princess cut diamonds, hers 3mm wide and mine 5mm wide, ironically since gold is so expensive, the bands with diamonds are the same price because they have less gold) I don't think my fiance would like this idea of not wearing a ring at all as I travel around Central American countries for a week or two for work........ I guess I will buy a few cheap ones and see what I like.....the silicon sounds good for mechanical work and maybe the titanium for traveling.

There are a dozen YouTube vids out there that show people making wedding rings out brass , copper, stainless steel machine nuts. I bet that there are half dozen members here that would whip one up for you, If you sent them a nut from your local hardware store. $4.65 : nut and postage $19.00 : labor $20.00 : inscription ______________________ $45.00 And ! I would strongly suggest against stainless steel. Can be irritating to cut, and most of it is fairly soft. (I wear my watch on NATO bands, only.) A plain gold wedding band, especially used, really isn’t that much. Tungsten, and that it breaks so easily, sounds like a good thing, to me.

Cheapest? Probably a Sharpie, in whatever color you prefer and if you have any artistic ability, you can make it look like a tattoo ring. Or a rubber O ring. _____________________________ Off finding Galt's Gulch

You can find cheap titanium rings for under $40 on etsy. I probably wouldn't want to wear any jewelry in a third world country IMO.

Guys, I'm not looking for cheap as in $5. I'm looking for something $50 +/- or so, that I can wear when I travel or beat up when I'm doing light mechanical work and (isn't flashy enough) that I won't get robbed over in a third world country. My fiance is from Colombia and 14k yellow gold is traditional there, and they wear it on the same finger as their engagement ring (side by side) and she wants it with diamonds. However, she wants both of our rings to be matching. It's one of those things that's just easier to agree to. Oddly enough the gold/diamonds is the same price as a normal 5mm gold band with gold prices the way they are. I'd prefer white gold myself and I normally never wear any jewelry besides a Stainless/platinum watch. This, hers is the same but thinner: https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 But I will look at the titanium and the rubber ones, perhaps order a few different ones.

Take a look at where you originally got the ring, many places have a stainless steel option of your own ring. I don't remember how much the platinum one was, but my stainless one was about $25. I was in the same boat years ago, the funny thing is, I think I've worn my actual wedding ring no more than 5 times. I've got the stainless one on all the time. Or maybe it's time to talk to Dave. I'm pretty sure he can figure out something... ______________________________________________________________________ "When its time to shoot, shoot. My wife and I have gone to silicon unless it’s something special, party/wedding/etc. if you go silicon make sure get one with either grooves or the little bumps on the back, makes all the difference in how it feels. I’m wearing one from Bulzi off of Amazon. Hell, is other people! J-P S

This is true. But in my Initial post I mentioned I was considering buying a sterling silver one (as my baseline for price) and how are the other metals choices in comparison.

Not really from Vienna |
I’ve been wearing a sterling silver one for over 20 years. If I remember correctly I bought it on fleabay for less than $35. As an aside, I was loading an 18 month-old bull in a trailer a couple weeks ago, when he kicked the center gate and it swung open and nicked my ring finger just above the ring. I realized instantly that had my hand been positioned a little differently I would probably have been picking my finger skin up from the dust and cow shit, and heading to our little hospital with it wrapped in a dirty rag. I haven’t worn a wedding ring since then.

Using my hands around machines ALL the time, I don’t wear a ring. Wife understands the “degloving” concept and is alright with it. We have been married 36 years. Haven’t lost any fingers due to rings getting caught. Have shortened two. One with a router, the other a jointer. If you have any such risks, the weakest material, with some kind of fault line, would be my choice. Give it a place to break if there is a need.
