I got a tour of a fast attack in San Diego 40+ years ago thanks to a Navy pal. I've never seen or been near a boomer.

As the article points out, the COLUMBIA class SSBN is DOD's #1 acquisition priority. But, it is not just the SSBN component of the strategic triad that needs replaced.

Takes a special breed to do that kind of work. Thanks to all of them for their service.

I toured one too...it lasted 8 years.

I finally found my way out....

Odd that they are going back to 16 missiles (Ohios have 24) but will be as big as an Ohio. I thought we would have been able to miniaturize. . .

The Navy has wasted so much time and money on the LCS and Zumwalt class Destroyer, its borderline criminal. This is the result of decades of piss-poor leadership from the DOD and the Navy.

Never underestimate the ability of the US government to waste time any money. Needed items will not be funded, unneeded items will be grossly overfunded. Other people's money is easy to spend.

Of course, they could design a submersible barge with 100 missiles on it and submerge it in Lake Superior.* No countermeasures. No torpedo tubes. No $50 billion sonar system. No horrendously expensive quieting technology.

No Soviet sub would get within 1000 miles of the thing, and it wouldn't matter how loud it was or what defensive weapons it had. It would be un-targetable, and therefore, invincible.

But it's cool to cruise at 20+ knots in a $20 gazillion boat, I guess. . .

* I recall some treaty between the US and Canada about warships in the Great Lakes, but of course, they could change that if they really wanted to.

Sure but in the context of nuclear warfare Lake Superior is a relatively small area to target compared to ... let’s say ... anywhere in the oceans.

My son is on a boomer and while I’m proud of him I’m glad I did my time on the surface (or as he calls it “the roof”).

Yeah, the oceans are vast, but the subs there are vulnerable to enemy attack. A boat in Lake Superior is immune from attack, for all practical purposes. The lake is roughly the size of Ohio, and even the Soviets couldn't carpet bomb the entire lake. . . The cost benefits of not having to have all the quieting and defensive gear outweigh the lack of mobility, IMO (Trident missiles have MUCH longer range than first-generation Polaris missiles that required the boats get closer to their targets).

Of course, they will NEVER do the 'noisy barge in a lake' plan. Navy isn't capable of thinking THAT far outside the box.
