I understand. Our family dog is nearly sixteen years old, and my wife and I are taking her in next week to the vet for a Senior Check appointment and, more pointedly, a Quality of Life discussion. I'm not blind to the issues going on, given her age...I fear a hard decision will need to be made after that appointment. I wish you the best with your own decision.

Always a hard decision but if the time comes, look into Lap of Love. The vet will come to your house. We used them for our dog Emma and it was a much better experience than taking her to the vet's office. I will hope for the best.

Because son, it is what you are supposed to do.

Made that difficult choice for my pitbull last summer before leaving for a month of training. No way I was going to have my wife do it. As of May, my pit was doing great. Come June, she had deteriorated significantly and I made the decision on July 1st to stop her suffering.

She lost weight, mobility and stopped eating. It was lymphoma.

She lived a lot longer than we expected. We rescued her from Austin Animal Center when she was 6 years old and she lived to 13. For many years she was our protector and friend. I felt fine leaving the doors unlocked if she was at home.

I'm no vet; just sharing my experience just to say I understand and sympathize.

About a month ago, part of the evening ritual before giving them their teeth cleaning treat is I make my mini-poodles go through some tricks. Layla is always eager to please driven by the treat. On a roll over, she vigorously did it like she does but she yelped at the end and limped for a few moments. After that, she did every trick but when I said, roll over, she would run away.

My wife started them on a clucosame supplement. After about a month of daily half tablets each, she's back to doing roll overs with ease and vigor. They're 8 years old.

It's sad to know our dogs age along with us and often sooner than us.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I can only imagine how you feel. I lost my Scout last July and her birthday is coming up on Saturday and I’m honestly a mess about it. Her situation was the same, was totally healthy for 14 years and then she was gone. I wish you the very best with her, as we never get to keep our pets as long as we’d like to.

This is such a great group. We use the phrase “imaginary friends” and the like to describe this community para has created in SigForm, but so often…your friendship is very real, and I feel the empathy at blood and bone level.

Quick update, she does appear to be rallying with the meds. She slept well last night, and got up this morning to go outside. She’s moving better, and I’m confident that she’s not hiding pain. That said, I heard and agree with DaBigBR, that this is not a cure, and steroids are not a long-term solution.

I’m deeply appreciative my friends.

We lost our 12-year-old Black Working Line Gshep to DM, a horrid disease. The biggest challenge for us was managing his drive and the disease. he still wanted to hike with us and our female Gshep and until his last day he was "in the game" of life". On his last day, he just couldn't get up and that was it.
They hide their discomfort and make it exceedingly difficult;t to make the final call and send them to the bridge.
He had 2 steps in and out of the house so we were able to manage his rear leg's lack of function and he never did have an accident in the house. I miss that dog-he was and is the best dog I will ever have.

My 12 year old shepherd had a bad arthritis attack very suddenly. So bad I thought she’d been poisoned.
The vet said arthritis, and actually said to put her down.
I took her home and after a few days got her off the prednisone, after that I used a combination of baby aspirin and CBD.
She lived another happy two years and at some point I knew it was time.
I’m glad I used my own judgment and didn’t do what that doctor told me to do.
Every dog is different, and I wish you the best of luck in your situation. It’s never easy.

So sorry to hear this about Jade. Know how you feel, have had similar situations. One shepherd, developed spinal spondylosis, and basically his spine was just degenerating. Nothing to fix it according to our vet, but we kept him going on meds and helped him get around and tried to keep him comfortable. Had to finally let him go, it got too bad for him, and painful for us to see him suffer.
Last one we had developed cancer, all of a sudden, and it was aggressive, he went within 2 months of the discovery of that. Before that each had been healthy, happy and active.
So, sorry you’re going thru this, Jade looks like a fantastic dog, and family member. Prayers that the meds will help and keep her without pain and mobile with you.

What form of CBD did you give your dog?

My only issue with the prednisone was it made her feel too good. She was trying to jump down some stairs and other things, I was afraid she was going to break some bones.
I use the CBD oil with my dogs now to calm them when the fireworks are exploding. One of my current pups also has seizures and it helps her too.
