My nephew age 14 went to summer camp this past week and before he left I told him my bit of advice from when I used to go summer camp in the mid-late 80': "Make sure you have a good flashlight and some backup batteries!"

Saw him yesterday at a cookout and asked him how it went and did he bring a good flashlight?

"Oh I only used it once!" he says

Turns out they have these camps wired for lights everywhere now, not like the Stone Ages when I went. Hell, they probably had AC too!

Me as soon as he said that:

I went to a Christian summer camp back in the early 80’s. Lights were not everywhere but cobwebs were.

Yeah, church camp I went to in the mid to late 70s had “cabins” that were essentially screened in porches with shutters to close if it rained too hard. I see they have fancy ones with a/c now. I don’t know how they would have gotten us to stay outside all the time in the heat if we had a/c to retreat to. Had to hike to a big communal bath/shower/toilet building too.

Our setup was the same, basically a big screened in porch, in the Texas summer. 4 or 5 cabins and one communal bathroom/ shower. I went back in college for 2 summers as a counselor. We got every other night off for 5 hours (6 on the weekend). On nights off in town and I had gotten so used to the heat that after an hour inside the 70° a/c in Pizza Hut I would get cold and have to back outside.

I have a few SIGs.

The best advice I remember when I was younger and attending camp was to talk the girls into going Snipe hunting Wink

Glad it worked out for your nephew.

Cheers~
