I looked at the article yesterday, but then saw that Energy Secretary Granholm was doing the announcement, and stopped reading. I figured that if it was anything important they'd have somebody with at least a little bit of credibility doing the announcement.

This thread has achieved criticality for humor. Way to go.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

This achievement does make me wonder if it wouldn't be better to back away from this frenzied push to adopt solar/ wind/ EVs and instead reserve our national capital to adopt nuclear as an interim energy source, until fusion technology has matured to a point for mass commercialization.

Well where's the fear in that?

This isn't cold fusion. It's the regular kind.

I hate offended people. They come in two flavours - huffy and whiny - and it's hard to know which is worst. The huffy ones are self-important, narcissistic authoritarians in love with the sound of their own booming disapproval, while the whiny, sparrowlike ones are so annoying and sickly and ill-equipped for life on Earth you just want to smack them round the head until they stop crying and grow up.

I recently saw a video by someone who knows their stuff calculate a 1000 to 1 INefficiency ratio of this experiment, which includes the energy costs of generating the lasers energy and the research facility itself.

I'm thinking that things will have to advance quite a bit before reversing that ratio.
