Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, one of the highest-profile members of law enforcement to emerge as a vocal supporter of President Trump, resigned from his position on Thursday.

County Clerk George Christenson said that he received a resignation letter from Clarke but that no reason for the move was provided.

In June, Clarke announced that he had rescinded his acceptance of a Homeland Security post. That followed an initial acceptance of a job as assistant secretary in DHS’s Office of Public Engagement. Clarke was supposed to serve as a liaison between DHS and state and local law enforcement.

Clarke, a tough-on-crime conservative Democrat, had built a following among conservatives with his provocative social media presence and for his support of President Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign. He also spoke at the Republican National Convention last summer. But he later was accused of plagiarism in his master’s thesis at the Naval Postgraduate School.

Clarke denied the report in which it was claimed that he failed to properly attribute his sources at least 47 times in his 2013 thesis, titled "Making U.S. security and privacy rights compatible."

In an email to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Clarke wrote, "only someone with a political agenda would say this is plagiarism."

He also drew criticism for conditions in his jails. A mentally ill inmate allegedly died after being deprived of water as punishment, prosecutors said.

Some Wisconsin conservatives had encouraged Clarke to challenge U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat, but he repeatedly rejected their overtures.

Clarke recently published a memoir, "Cop Under Fire."

There was no immediate word on a replacement.

I do hope he will be doing something in the DHS. They need a good person like him to clean up that agency.

Please take a look at his record of running the jail, before you suggest that he does anything that has to do with public safety. His is one of the most frequently sued agencies in the United States. He earned $220K in speaking fees last year, and was out of town on book tours more than he was in. Four people in his jail died last year from neglect, including a newborn and a mentally ill inmate who died of dehydration.

I've worked for good Sheriffs (and one not so good). Clarke is a grandstander, that should have been taking care of business and not letting his jail responsibilities fall through the cracks for personal gain.

I concur. There is more to leadership and management besides one's performance in front of a camera.

He says a lot of things that appeal to me regarding crime and behavior, but I've been concerned about how much time he managed to find to spend in front of TV cameras, speaking on national/societal issues. Maybe I'm wrong, but it sure has seemed like one of his primary goals has been to be in the national spotlight, possibly at the expense of the job he was elected to do.

So it turns out he could talk the talk but failed to walk the walk?

At least read his book "Cop under Fire" before criticizing, explains alot of things.

Sheriff Clarke and the NRA aren't perfect but they are on our side.

I truly love how easily people can have their minds changed based on someone's say so.

Criminals dying because of neglect?? In some cases he should get a reward.

I think that jail guy was flooding his cell, so they turned the water off. I don't know the small details, I doubt if Sheriff Clarke was directly involved.

And I hope he's setting his sights on something where he can make a bigger impact for conservatives.

Leadership and management. That why you always see the Navy shitcan the CO when something goes wrong. If it goes really wrong the XO and master chief of the command go too.

As someone who had occasion to lodge people in jails for nearly 40 years I would ask why a newborn would be in jail. This part of the statement seems inflammatory.
