Recently I was talking with the owner of the auto dealership we have been using for several decades. He wanted to let me know that they were going to be adding a 3% charge for using a credit card. There would be no additional fee for debit cards however. He said he was reluctant to do this, but after an economic analysis, he discovered that the credit card fees he pays, were the equivalent of the full salary and benefits for 13 employees. This is not a particularly large dealership, so the economic impact of credit card fees was greater than I would have imagined.

Local Ford dealer charges it unless you do debit and enter your pin.

Getting frustrating

I guess the market can only bear so much. A little Italian restaurant I like will not even take a card for purchases below $15 now.

I kinda like seeing retailers encouraging cash.

It’s kind of damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Credit card processing fees have gotten so out of hand that businesses have to charge for it if they want to break even. By law at least in our state, you have to notify folks that is what you are doing. Debit cards do not impose any fees.. and of course, cash allows disreputable employees to steal, so it’s hard no matter what businesses do.

I went and bought a new Mazda yesterday.
The salesman suggested that I put down the deposit with my credit card to get the points, so I asked if there would be a credit card fee on it.
They said no, they didn't do that, So I haven't seen that here. Not yet, at least.
