HUGE Thank You to all those who serve, and especially to those on duty over the holidays! I hope all of you have a blessed Christmas season.

I was called out at 0200 today, got off at 1130. Had a bad fire (four dead) in one of the small cities and my dept needed help with traffic control.

My job was easy, I stayed in a car most of the time. It was the firemen - all volunteers - who were outside at 10 degrees for hours. THAT was hard.

I worked part of yesterday ( urgent care medicine) and my wife ( inpatient occupational therapy) is working today. My good friends ( radiology tech and phlebotomist) are also working today. Sort of goes with the territory. Spent more than a few holidays on duty in Iraq Afghanistan and other garden spots too.

Thank you OP for starting this thread and for all that have responded, it is appreciated and I couldn't agree more with what has been said, especially for our service members overseas.

I did have to work Christmas Eve this year but was able to be off today which is nice. I am glad yesterday was much more pleasant than Friday. It was a sh*t show and had me wondering if a hole to another dimension had been left in our city.

Merry Christmas!

Had last night off to be with the family. Working tonight and amazed at the never ending parade coming through the ER, as soon as we empty triage it fills again. It's Christmas night people, do you not have anything better to do?!

I had casualty notification duty this week. Fortunately, i didn't see any business. Turned over to my relief yesterday morning. Hopefully he won't be busy either.

I well remember Christmas 1962 standing post outside the LBJ Ranch at Stonewall, Texas. My wife
and infant son remained in Washington, DC, and I stood looking at the bright stars wondering how she and my son were enjoying this holiday season. Many
more Christmas, birthday, and other holidays were celebrated apart due to the demands of "the job".

In 1988, with retirement, I have been able to be with family for those important days, and I sympathize those "first responders" who are separate from family.

Somebody's got to do it!

True. I had little patience for family members fighting on the holiday like this.

Same. Families getting together, getting drunk, high, and/or just plain argumentative, and beating on each other. And teenagers forced to go to their court-ordered visits with their non-custodial parents, even though they hate each other, and shortly after arriving they're fighting with each other.

I was off, but on call. Luckily, it was quiet enough that I wasn't needed.

We had a Little ice and snow that morning so I spent a bit of time out on the interstate by the river as it was pretty slick and had a few put it off into the rock walls.

Ended the day with an upset elderly lady stripping naked to show me and the medics where the dog had bitten her.
