I'm not anti EV and have never said I won't buy one. My golf buddy has a Tesla Model S (~8 years old) and just bought his wife a new Model Y. Very impressive cars for sure! If I was just around town I would own an EV for sure. I do have to take road trips for work into the boon docks occasionally. An EV just won't work for me in those situations.

What I do like about them is the acceleration and how quiet they are. (I've only driven two Tesla's) Very impressive. The model S in the snow was almost as good as my Subaru but that model is old. I'm sure the newer models have improved. Did I mention the trunk space? No engine means trunk space doubles.

When I retire at the end of this year I may consider an EV. The wife and I plan on a few road trips (main roads with charging stations) but other than that we'll putt putt around town. EVs seem optimal for my future use.

For those that say they'll never trust the auto-pilot. Try driving a new (even old) Tesla in rush hour bumper-to-bumper on auto-pilot. Pretty sure you'll change your tune.

My Ford has Hands free Blue Cruise.

When you’re in bumper to bumper it’s quite nice.

You turn it on and the car steers, brakes and accelerates for you.

If you want to change lanes, just tap the blinker stalk and it changes lanes when there’s enough space.

Once you have trust in it, you just relax and let the car do the rest…

If you have an accident, who gets the ticket? You, the car, the manufacturer or the programmer?

You do.

Ford has an eye nanny that watches your eyes and if you’re not looking at the road it will buzz and beep at you and disengage the hands free system.

You can’t set it and go make yourself a sandwich… Razz

Naturally some people sue the car company.

More ‘power’ to y’all who want EVs. However, for me, they will have to pry the steering of an ICE vehicle from my cold….

I have discussed EVs here and in other forums, and I’ve said I could live with a BMW i3 equipped with the ICE backup generator. For those who don’t know about them, do a little research. If you see one that has two gas/plug panels on it, it has the generator. I could see getting one just as a hobby car.

Still, EV range anxiety of EVs preclude me from going full-on EV as my main driver. I’d always have anxiety using the heater/ac, audio, heated seats, headlights, etc.

Congrats on the EV purchase. I think that once you start driving it you’ll find yourself becoming more comfortable with “range anxiety” as it really isn’t an issue (if you have access to the Tesla charging network).

As was said above EV’s are not necessarily for everyone and may not work well in some places but for those with more than one vehicle having an EV in the mix will be a game changer. We have 14k miles on our YLR and have had zero maintenance to do other than rotating the tires, which I did myself.

This week I had to drive up to extreme NW PA for a site visit in a national Forrest. Of course it has rained a lot and the gravel roads were washed out so having my Super Duty did come in handy.

Basically, that’s the right combo.

Some manner of “get the mulch/drive through bad weather/take long road trips” vehicle, and then electric for 90% of driving.

(For most people. I have family members who are farmed, in a fairly remote area. Electric would not really make sense, other than as a used cheap car to run around in - Nissan leaf’s make good pasture buggies, etc.)

My brother in law bought a Tesla. The 0 to 60 acceleration on that thing is insane.

Yeah, there are currently only two technologies that have maximum torque at zero RPM:

Electric & steam.

Of course I think it would be cool to have a steam powered car, but I'd need a boiler's license and the time to build it myself.

A new radial flux electric motor can produce 600+ HP and only weigh 29 pounds.

The only thing I can think of me doing that would be less likely than having time to build a steam powered car?

Me making a car payment. Not happening.

Finally got the home NEMA 14-50r outlet installed today, between work, health, family I'd let it go for a month and the wife said "just hire someone"

So I did. Duke Energy rebates back the cost of the charger install, not the charger, up to $819

Many of the big houses know this and quotes were over $1400 for a single 240v EV outlet install.

Found several independent operators that do EV chargers, hired a guy and he installed the Hubbel NEMA EV plug I had vs the one he uses, THHN 6 wire for future upgrades and the breaker.

Outlet with Charger

Testing the Circuit

Works and charged it from 69 to 80 in 20 min, it's only a 32 amp charger.

May upgrade to an Emporia 48 volt, had it wired for that.

Oh forgot, that EV in the picture is mine, traded the F150 in, 23 years of good service but it needed work, trans rebuild, timing chain replacement, and a bit of rust repair on the roof all together would be some $

They actually took it in trade...

so I have a 2023 Equinox EV RS in Pearl white

Nice ! I have had the 102Kw Ultium platform for a couple of months. So far zero issues. Getting 3 miles per Kw Supposedly equal to 89 MPG.
Traded a Durango RT and gained 175HP.

Have Fun

Confused My Emporia charger is 240 volt, not 48.

It is spec'd for a 60 amp breaker if hard-wired, 50 amp if using the NEMA 14-50 plug-in receptacle. Max charging current is 80% of the breaker rating, but is adjustable to lower charge rates via the Emporia app.

I normally keep mine set to a lower charge rate to keep the charger cooler.
