Electronic Earmuffs
Great idea now someone needs to make affordable cloth covers for the pads for us in SW Florida who shoot in the 100 degree summers.

Wearing double hearing protection is not a bad idea but it does not double the protection from decibels. If I remember my hearing protection safety training correctly, it adds an additional 4 to 8 decibels of protection over single hearing pro use.

I couldn't remember the brand, so I dug them up. Peltor Tactical Pro.

I have these and a set of custom earplugs for use on indoor ranges. Earmuffs only when outdoors.

Does anyone have experience with this brand?
I am in need of a new set. Walmart has them for 86.00.

I have an older set of Walkers that I thought were just OK.

My suggestion is that if your hearing is still within normal limits buy a set of Sordins or other high end muffs. $300 is a whole lot cheaper than hearing aids.

Thanks. I lost one eardrum ,via surgery ,when I was a kid. I want to save the one that I have. My budget is around 125.00. I have a Walmart gift card, that is where I have to spend my money!

I use the Walkers XCEL muffs. I like them. I also use ear plugs with them.

I turn them up to full volume so I can carry on a conversation while others are shooting. Also great for hearing the instructor when you're taking a shooting class.

I have Sordins for shooting, but use these in the shop. I’m not convinced that the Sordins are necessarily “better”.

That's a reckless and misleading statement.

dB is a non-linear scale, every 3 dB is double the power, every 6 is 4X the power.

Personally I find a huge difference between using plugs under muffs and just muffs, especially at indoor ranges that I frequent. I would only use one form of protection outdoors during classes otherwise give me the 4dB improvement, by all means!

Back to the OP I have had peltors for 10 years that I like but they use 4AAA batteries and more recent muffs use just 2, which is a really nice improvement.

The Sordins really can't be beat but they are expensive. They main thing that you are paying the big bucks for is the electronics which is what clips the damaging noise from the shots. If you are shooting action sports where it is important to hear the the other people at all times (ie giving or receiving commands) then the electronics are important. If you are shooting by yourself then it is not as important how quick and accurate the electronic response and filters are. For that matter a comfortable pair of non electronic plugs or headset may be just fine for your needs.

From my experience, almost everyone hasn't had enough experience with the different brands of electronic ear pro.

What I own is Howard leights. They were highly recommended and I loved them. That was until I bought some walkers for a few dollars more. And I quickly understood that those 25 dollars more were well spent. The walkers were much better. Then I upgraded to the walker's earbuds and was surprised to find that they offered better protection and almost as good surround awareness. I figured at that 150 dollar mark I was set for life.

Then I tried on some sordins and realized all that name brand less expensive shit is just that, shit.

I didn't buy the sordins, because I listen to music while shooting so I went with the peltor 500 Bluetooth. These like the sordins, do not cut off audio during gunfire, instead, it filters it out. You can be standing next to someone firing 7.62 and hold a conversation with no problem.

The peltor 500 on sale ran me less than the walker earbuds did.

If I have to invest again it will be for some used comtac's off ebay or some milsurp seller.
