As the subject indicates, but specifically a police GPS tracker. Even if the item isn’t marked as police property.

I ran across this on YouTube and thought it was interesting.

Legally, yeah you can peel it off of your car.....it's your car. The only time I can see why you couldn't is if it's court ordered or something to that effect.

GPS trackers require a court order. Unless you plan on dropping it back off at the station, it’s felony theft. And a half dozen other felonies.

Apparently the Indiana Supreme Court hasn’t ruled that that is the case - in Indiana. If it isn’t marked, how would you know who it belongs to, or what it is for that matter?

Pretty simple.

Call the police. Report a “device” that you have located on your vehicle.

Laugh when they pull it off of your vehicle. Keeps you from catching a charge in the event that it is police.

I’m also pretty sure there are SCOTUS cases that require a court order. Signed by a circuit court judge.

How so? If I found some thing stuck on my car I'd toss it. How would one even know that it was a tracker or even police property?

If I had a court order saying I was required to have it on my that is a different story, or if it was marked property of police, do not remove, then maybe.

You can say “how so” and make up hypotheticals all you wish. Trackers don’t randomly get put on people’s cars for no reason. If you are the target of an investigation, and a court order has been issued to put a tracker on your car, it is being monitored. Removing it is also going to be monitored.

You remove it, you’re going to catch a charge.

Lots of questions here:
- How are those things attached to begin with?
- What's it look like?
- How big is it?

They come in lots of shapes and sizes. Usually attached by a magnet.

If the car owner is not aware of the court order and the tracker is not labelled, the police will have one hell of a time making a charge stick. As the car is someone else's personal property.

A tracker can end up on someone's car from any number of sources.....jealous wife/GF, ex-wife, a parent, criminals looking to steal that model car when it's parked in a more ideal place, on the wrong car...… I know someone that hid a tracker in their childs car seat to track what the soon to be ex's whereabouts.

If I found an unlabeled tracker on my car, it would end up being stuck on a taxi cab or city bus.

Mr. Jones, could I convince you to use a reference line in your signature instead of underscores? Put [h r] inyour signature with no space between the h and r. It will shorten the size of the lines in your posts.

Thanks. Smile

Is this common for you guys? Police GPS tracker on your car? Why in the world would there be such a device on your car and why are you guys acting like this is so common and like the only question is 'can I pry it off', instead of 'WHY AM I BEING SURVEILLED??'

This thread isn’t titled “removing a repoman/jealous husband/wife” tracker from your car.

It specifically says “police”. I’m telling you what will happen if you remove a LE tracker. You are removing property that is not yours.

Enjoy.

Edited- Para nailed it. Calling the police if you locate a “device” also gets you the answer to the “why” if it isn’t the police.

Yeah. It’s really not a problem unless you’re a drug dealer?

In my short 22 years, we have never asked for a gps tracker on our drug dealers or murder suspects.

I have one in my daughter’s car for emergencies. It cost me $79. It’s actually pretty decent too.

You're supposed to attach it to a bus going to San Jose or Cincinatti or some damn place.
