Unfortunate news, but Gabbard is choosing the correct path.

Shots fired at the White House. Shooter “shot down” by Secret Service

18:22 EDT 23 May 2026, updated 19:42 EDT 23 May 2026
By JAMES GORDON, US NEWS REPORTER

A suspect opened fire near the White House and struck a civilian before he was shot down by the Secret Service, according to reports.

The individual approached the perimeter on Saturday evening and unloaded several shots, a law enforcement source told the Daily Mail.

The White House was placed on lockdown with the president inside as the shooting unfolded.

The gunman fired three shots and hit a civilian before he was 'taken down' by Secret Service agents, Fox News chief congressional correspondent Chad Pergram said.

He was taken to the hospital, a law enforcement source confirmed to the Daily Mail.

Journalists reporting from the White House were left scrambling for cover as they reported hearing 20 to 30 rounds fired.

The reporters were evacuated from the North Lawn and raced to safety inside the press briefing room.

Television footage from the scene showed heavily armed agents roaming the perimeter with the FBI now on the scene.

Video showed ABC White House Correspondent Selena Wang ducking and hiding after the gunfire erupted.

'I was in the middle of taping on my iPhone for a social video from the White House North Lawn when we heard the shots,' she said.

'It sounded like dozens of gunshots. We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now,' she added.

The president was inside the White House at the time as he was working on an Iran peace deal with Middle Eastern leaders inside the Oval Office.

The press pool had been dismissed about an hour before the shots were heard, with just a few broadcast journalists remaining.

Reporters who were already inside the White House were told to shelter in place while Secret Service agents shouted 'get down' and warned of 'shots fired.

They have since been released from the briefing room and the lockdown has been lifted.

It comes just weeks after many of the same reporters were forced to cower behind tables and chairs during the White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting,

CNN reported the gunfire came from the 17th Street side of the White House, closer to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the FBI is present as part of the investigation.

'FBI is on the scene and supporting Secret Service responding to shots fired near White House grounds - we will update the public as we’re able.'

The Secret Service issued a statement which said: 'We are aware of reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW and are working to corroborate the information with personnel on the ground. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.'

The Daily Mail has contacted the DC Metropolitan Police Department, the White House press office and the Secret Service for comment.

This is a breaking story - more follows...

UPDATED: 20:30 EDT, 23 May 2026 - Shooter has died.

The Democrats have completely normalized assassination as a solution to their shortcomings, their failures.

Sick motherfuckers, truly sick fucks.

White House gunman identified as 21-year-old Maryland man: sources

Multiple sources confirmed to Fox News Digital the suspect accused of opening fire near the White House Saturday afternoon has been identified as Nasire Best, 21, of Maryland.

Sources said the suspect, who was shot by U.S. Secret Service agents, died on the way to GW Medical Center.

He allegedly had multiple prior encounters with the Secret Service and a history of mental health issues.

Best was detained by the Secret Service on June 26, 2025, for flagging down agents and making threats, and again on July 10, 2025, for entering a restricted area, Fox News has learned.

Fox News Digital's Michael Ruiz and Fox News' Paul Mauro contributed to this report.

Trump says agreement with Iran ‘largely negotiated’
Mr Trump, in a Truth Social post on Saturday, said the deal would include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz but did not give any further details.

US President Donald Trump has said that an agreement with Iran has been “largely negotiated” and is to be finalised soon.

Mr Trump, in a Truth Social post on Saturday, said the deal would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz but provided no further details.

This is coming after 85 days of tension and violent attacks caused by the US-Israel attack on Iran on 28 February, which would eventually engulf the whole of the Middle East, with Iran and Lebanon as the most affected countries. It led to the death of thousands of people and the displacement of even more.

Talks between the countries at war have been ongoing since the ceasefire agreement in April, but without much success, as the disagreement over the control of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s uranium enrichment created friction.

According to Mr Trump, the agreement was reached during a conference call that also involved the presidents of Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, and Iran. The negotiations involved regional countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia, which pushed for a deal, with Pakistan as the main mediator.

“I am in the Oval Office at the White House, where we just had a very good call…an agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalisation between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and other Countries,” he wrote in his post.

Although he did not provide the details on the deal, he, however, insisted that any agreement with Iran would prevent the country from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

“Final aspects and details of the deal are currently being discussed and will be announced shortly.”

He also stated that he had a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which “went very well”.

Axios, an American publication, reported that the agreement is likely to involve a 60-day cease-fire extension during which the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened without tolls.

Iran would also operate freely, and negotiations would be held on the suspension of Iran’s uranium enrichment program. The US would also issue a sanction waiver and remove the blockade on Iranian ports.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the call with Mr Trump and Arab leaders as “very useful and productive” and noted that Iran and the US talks could take place “very soon.”

The Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, had previously disclosed that the US and Iranian positions had been converging over the last week. But he insisted that this does not mean agreements would be reached on key issues.

In a post on X, the Pakistani leader said, “I congratulate President Donald Trump on his extraordinary efforts to pursue peace.”

“We hope to host the next round of talks very soon.”

Yeah, everyone who lives and works in a place like Washington, DC, should be totally familiar with the sound of multiple distant gunshots as if it were a war zone. I mean, everyone was brought up watching violent teevee shows and movies and they are totally accurate in educating people what the experience is like—no? Roll Eyes

I lived in northern Virginia just across the line from DC for years and literally the only time I heard gunfire was at the indoor range I went to very infrequently. One of the things that is very often reported in active shooting events is that gunshots are not recognized for what they are. Someone doesn’t have to be a stupid antigunner to not be familiar with the sound, and especially not reacting to it immediately.

For a good discussion about how people deal with unexpected catastrophic events I recommend the book The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes — and Why by Amanda Ripley.

Used to live in the city of Alexandria. Back in the early '90s after having gotten up for a bathroom break, and then laid back down, a volley of shots broke out...my reaction was to roll off of the bed, grab the M1 Carbine under the bed while chambering a round and wait a few seconds...then phoned it in via 911. The ABC reporter was a little slow, but took cover at least.
