Tacfoley, and anyone who lives in the UK or Australia, I would enjoy hearing your take on this video. Of course, all comments are welcome.

This 17 minutes, but I believe it is worth your time.

I've long enjoyed Katie Hopkins' commentary on current events. I find myself in agreement with her most of the time.

The way Rowan essentially agreed with her premise that free speech was dead in Australia in one sentence and then moved immediately on to the topic of South Africa was disappointing. You would think that some degree of follow up would be warranted on such an important topic.

A lot of this nonsense starts over there and then works it's way into Berkeley and other leftist enclaves in the US. The big new 'debate' is the insane argument that if you happen to prefer one set of genitals over another in sex - that means that you are automatically transphobic. Yes, if you have any kind of sexual preference, you are the 'problem' and the literally mentally damaged cross dressers are the 'normal' ones. They are teaching that in some universities now.

Yes, and this is awful. Everything the Left is doing is deigned to sink the West into chaos, sowing irrational, unhinged ideas into the general discourse and forcing the world to treat them as rational, resorting to name calling if there is any resistance. I believe it started with Critical Theory and has grown from there.

Australia ...

Most are shocked to learn that we do not have the explicit legal freedom of speech.

Not a defense stance in court.

Australia does not have a Bill of Rights, First Amendment.

Not 100%, but I think Aus is the only western democracy not have such a right.

The framers of the Aus Constitution, placed their faith in the democratic process for the protection of individual rights.

In fact, the Aus Constitituon does not expressly guarantee many rights or freedoms. Freedom of speech is not one of those.

There is however, an implied right to political speech. The High Court of Australia figured that out for us Aussies, stating that the right is implied, the people must be heard, and to develop informed opinions.

But that is sure not in any way, the right to free speech. No protection should your conversation be shutdown.

There are some laws on the books, more to restrict or burden freedom of political speech.

Essentially, no enforceable obligation to uphold free speech either.

If I don't like your racist chant, I have the right to kick your arse out of my house.

As always, this is one side of the story, there's more to this, this being just my viewpoint and opinion. Which here in Aus, you can ignore or do something about it.

Thanks, Chris. I appreciate your insight.

With the erosion of rights you are experiencing, have you thought about leaving Australia?

Short answer, yes, to returning.
Can't be real soon, for reasons of my own.

Yeah. You can add Canada to that title as well. Just ask Mark Steyn.

Thanks for posting this. She is outstanding!

My boss is out for the week, he's lived in Australia the last 10 years or so.

Everything is on camera there when you drive. You go 1 kph over the speed limit and your fine shows up in the mail. It's interesting though:
DUI - 250 dollar fine and 3 month loss of license.
Your registration being 1 day late: 600 dollar fine!

I am not. I'm not certain, but I believe the U.S. is the only nation in the world with a right to free speech explicitly codified in its Constitution.

Pretty certain that Afghanistan has an article defining freedom of expression is inviolable.

Are there others?

The Indian Constitution guarantees six "rights", one of which is the "Freedon of Speech and expression".
However....
quote:
the Constitution has authorized
the State to impose certain reasonable restrictions on each of them:
1. Restrictions may be put on the Right to Freedom of speech and expression
in the interests of the sovereignty, integrity and security of India, friendly
relations with foreign States, public order, decency or morality, or in
relation to contempt of court, defamation or incitement to an offence

so... your freedom of speech is whatever the government decides it is.
