His diet consists of black coffee, and sarcasm. |
I'd rather be e-mailed or called first. If I open the door at all, it will be with, at the very least, a LCP in my pocket. Assuming I'm wearing pants.

Oh stewardess, I speak jive. |
I prefer direct communication first, but there is a very short list of people who'd get a pass from me in almost all scenarios (both of my parents, three long time friends, and the brunette who lives down the road). Generally, though, it's bad form. I could be nekkid in my living room, or engaged in all manner of activities ill-suited for kids or certain audiences. Almost no one likes surprise knocks.

I'd be surprised, but not offended. I agree that prior contact would be better, but I think I'd welcome any SF member who showed up. (Prior contact would enable me to at least clear off some place to sit down....) flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

i'd be good with it. but my wife and I have always had a pretty open-doors policy with friends. ____________________________ While you may be able to get away with bottom shelf whiskey, stay the hell away from bottom shelf tequila. - FishOn

If it's someone I know face to face already and there's a reason for the visit, then I would say it's not rude. But absent both of those, I would say, "wtf?" I was awaken one morning by a long time friend from high school who I've been close with. As a matter of fact, I sold him my first house and I moved to the next neighborhood. I open the door and he's there with someone who's his friend who I don't know. Okay... I tell them to come in. I ask, "would you like some coffee?" "Yes!" I said, "make yourself at home, go to the kitchen and make us all coffee." Later, he said he was offended that I would embarrass him in front of this other person. Shortly after, I didn't consider him a friend at all. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Very strange. I wouldn’t be too happy if a member showed up at my door without asking or talking about it first.

I take it you're in TX? I think many of us would like to shake his hand and say hello. If that's in the cards, maybe say 'Hi' for the rest of us, too?

The success of a solution usually depends upon your point of view |
I would consider it very rude. Even if “if you’re ever in town” had been part of a previous conversation there is no excuse for not making some kind of prior arrangements. “I was in the neighborhood” works for people who live here in town but not for someone halfway across the country. “We truly live in a wondrous age of stupid.” - 83v45magna "I think it's important that people understand free speech doesn't mean free from consequences societally or politically or culturally." -Pranjit Kalita, founder and CIO of Birkoa Capital Management

The only reason I would ask for a heads up text or phone call is because my work schedule. I spent most of my time in Kannapolis/Charlotte for work and only in Durham occasionally. Would I mind, no not really because it would be nice to speak with a live person once in a while and have a conversation other than: the who, what, when, where and why an individual died.
