I just got back from the funeral for Deputy Heath Gumm, of my old department, killed last week in the line of duty. He had tested for Detective, but the selection hadn't been made. During his eulogy Sheriff McIntosh promoted him to Detective posthumously, added a Detective's star to the flag presented to his wife. He also retired his call sign and badge number. It was a genuinely fine thing to do, and reminds me again of why I loved working for a Sheriff's Office.

Pictures of the procession and funeral

RIP Deputy Gumm. 10-42.

Way too young. From the looks of the photos - he had a lot of friends and enjoyed some good times.

RIP

I hope that it's more than just a gesture, and that his family gets an increase in benefits from the promotion...

I know people die at work. But it’s different if not accidental or natural.

What the sheriff did for him was outstanding. Still doesn’t compare to having him alive but the gesture brought tears to my eyes.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
