It has a big screen.

I sneeze with food in my mouth.

I wipe it off with dirty fingers.

I need the Forum advice on effectively cleaning it.

WINDEX didn't help.

Water doesn't work either.

What do the knowledgeable ones say?

What the hell, George. Big Grin
Are we talking, just the monitor screen?

From the start, I'm going to suggest you don't assault it w/ liquids that will then run down into the bottom of the monitor frame, for a start.

You should get the 80-column card with the extra 64K of memory. It worked great on the last Apple computer I owned.

From apple support

...To clean the screen on your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air, first shut down the computer and unplug the power adapter. Dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with water only, then use it to clean the computer's screen.

To clean hard-to-remove smudges or fingerprints on the display or exterior of your Mac, you can use a cloth moistened with a 70-percent isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution to gently wipe the display or enclosure of your Mac notebook....

Most apple screens have a thin layer of glass.
It can be damaged so be relatively gentile when wiping.

DO NOT SPAY CLEANER DIRECTLY ON THE SCREEN.
SPRAY IT ON THE CLOTH AND WIPE THE SCREEN.

It can in theory drip into the guts and void the warranty.

I use the little packets of moist towelettes used to clean eyewear and wipe it after with a microfiber to get rid of streaks.

It's basically water and alcohol, so you can just make your own, but my wife buys this stuff by the case, so I just grab a bunch to put in the desk drawer.

Perhaps cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze?

Perhaps get up outta your chair, grab a soft moistened cloth or paper towel, and wipe it off? Immediately?

WINDEX didn't help.

Water doesn't work either.
Many foods, and your saliva, contain acids. Acids etch things. You cannot clean off etching.

Thus the advice above: An ounce of prevention...

"They say" you're not supposed to use window cleaners such as Windex on computer screens, but I've been doing it for as long as I've sat in front of computer screens, which is a good long while.

But I spray it on, being careful not to let it run into the bottom, and quickly, gently wipe it off with soft paper towels. For really dirty screens it's taken multiple passes, but I eventually get 'er done.

That's all I got.

Be careful what you use on a computer screen. I clean mine with just a damp microfiber cloth and dry it with a dry one. Works fine.

They make alcohol cleaning wipes for computer screens.

I would be hesitant to use winded or other cleaning supplies. I know on my older MacBook Pro is said not to use such cleaners.

#1 tip - prevention

Get a box of kleenex stationed nearby

#2 tip - microfiber and distilled water

Get a couple new or just-washed microfiber cloths, dampen part of one slightly with distilled water, and wipe. Once the crud is gone, dampen a different cloth with distilled water and wipe again, then dry the screen off with a third.

Why microfiber? Why distilled water?

Microfiber has little tiny hooks that grab crud without the need for cleaning agents, and distilled water doesn't leave spots when it evaporates.

Toss it into the oven and bake it.

That way, you'll have an Apple pie. Big Grin

In all seriousness I would wet a microfiber rag with a little bit of water and wipe it down. Pretend you're detailing a car - whatever you spray, spray on the rag (not the glass/plastic) then wipe.

^^^^^^
This 100%.

I get a bowl with 190 degree water (hot water pot) with a very slight amount of Dawn mixed in. By the time I go to use it, the water is usually just cooled enough to allow squeezing excess with a bare hand. Works like a charm. Then I use a soap free wet rag, then a microfiber cloth to dry immediately so it has no chance to spot.

Distilled water and a soft microfiber polishing cloth. These Zeiss Jumbo Reusable Microfiber Lens Cloth, 12x16in (Set of 2) are bigger, softer, and much cheaper than the $19 Apple polishing cloth. They have a very fine weave and are washable/reusable.
