At 40, you are in the age range to give zero Fs about what others think. And that disregard will only increase as you get older. I have the version with the back brim long enough to cover down the back of the neck. ...that I will support and defend...

I always wear a very similar hat when I do yardwork on sunny days. I had a minor case of skin cancer 15 years ago and am trying to avoid a recurrence. One thing to keep in mind is that it is possible to sunburn through the mesh after prolonged time in the sun, depending on your hairline. I had never owned a traditional flat cap and tried one one few years ago. Wife: "That is an old man's hat". Me (at 68): "Your point?".

Henschel makes a great hat, and that will keep you much cooler than a solid crown would. I wear straw cowboy hats here on the farm. Resistol Denison full crown in winter, Resistol Denison open weave crown in summer. The open makes a BIG difference. The trick now is, at only 25 bucks for a Henschel, which is a STEAL, buy one for each of the kids, and dare them to wear it. Two of my three adopted open weave crown straw cowboy hats after I bought them for them. I'd love to have a proper felt cowboy hat, but it really is never cool enough here to enjoy one. Just took a look, they are available on their website as well... "I, however, place economy among the first and most important republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared." Thomas Jefferson

That's a fine looking hat, and quite functional. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

That hat is similar to the Tilley hat I've had for several years. I bought a spare when Tilley started only making hats from nylon. The mesh on the Tilley hat has a bit more filtering for sunlight. You might want to make sure you don't burn through the open mesh on your hat.

Frangas non Flectes![]() |
I’ve been thinking lately that I need something like this, actually. One of the guys in my shooting group has a Flectarn wizard hat and another one just got a super wide brim Multicam boonie that pins up into a tricorn. Why? Because we live approximately fifty yards from the surface of the sun and fashion takes a backseat to functionality, but we’re old enough that hats can be dopey and fun. I was looking around for a sombrero in camouflage just to complete the bizarre trifecta, but for now, I settled on a flat cap in DCU. Should have it next week. Still need something with a wide brim. ______________________________________________ "If the truth shall kill them, let them die.” Endeavoring to master the subtle art of the grapefruit spoon.

^^^Right here. The practicality & utility of that hat by far make up for any perceived lack of fashion. It's not as if you're wearing something a clown or Captain Morgan would wear. It doesn't look out of place nor draw negative attention. I also agree that when travelling abroad, I would avoid wearing anything that advertises I'm a tourist, much less one from USA.This message has been edited. Last edited by: iron chef,

I have a hat just like it. Covered top to protect my bald spot, vented for air, and a brim to protect face an neck from sun. I have two and where them for yard work or some kind of hiking. I will wear torn up ratty clothes doing yard work and quick run to the store to get something I need and my wife can’t believe I am going out in public like that. I could care less what people think. I am not out to impress anyone. Only picture I could find was hiking in Hawaii. ![]() NRA Benefactor Life Member

Hey, not only the hat, but I had those same shoes, too! Hiked and ran hundreds, maybe thousands of miles in the three or four pairs that I owned. I was pissed when they stopped making them. There might be some kind of subconscious Sigforum uniform thing going on here...
