Our Son today gave us a trip to any location on Earth for our 25th Anniversary. I am asking those of you who have been around the world. Of all the places you have been where would you like to go back to and why? This can include a cruise ship.

Because of my Wife’s Italian heritage he was going to send us to Italy, but decided why should he pick where we would like to go.

Decision has been made: Italy bound thank you all!

A Mediterranean cruise.

I've been to London / UK several times for business, but never had much time to just tour. Everyone speaks English (after a fashion) and it is easy to get around.

What an awesome gift. Good on your kid.

Mrs.BurtonRW and I would either go back to Australia and do a few things we either missed out on or didn’t get to do the way we really wanted to the first time around, ...

OR, go on an African safari, probably in Tanzania.

Of the four continents I have lived and traveled in, here are the places I would return to in a heartbeat:

1) Iceland
2) Denmark
3) Switzerland

Yuma, Arizona definitely or Barstow, California!
Just kidding. I haven't traveled very much.

New Zealand (been there twice)
Alaska (been there twice)--but do it in early fall
Baltic Cruise (been 1 1/2 times)
British Isles (be sure to include Ireland, Wales, and Scotland)
Cruise of the Danube, Main, and Rhine Rivers (several companies offer such tours from Amsterdam to Budapest, or reverse)
AMTRAK 9-day trip from Chicago to Seattle, with 4 days and nights in Glacier National Park. There is a guide who travels with you and each tour is limited to 10 people.

I did a tour in '15 of Italy. Venice, Cinque Terre, a few hours in Pisa, Florence, the Umbria Highlands (e.g. Asisi), Rome, and Sorrento. My friend recommended the tour company, Intrepid Travel, and what I liked about them was:

You aren't lead around by your nose 16 hours a day (e.g. tour bus, tour, tour bus, tour, rinse and repeat). Instead, you get a couple hour orientation walk and the tour leader will help make reservations and give tips. I really liked being able to explore on my own or team up with someone like minded on the trip (e.g. two of us in Cinque Terre love being on the water so we took boats between cities and everyone else hiked).

Small number of people in tour group. If I remember correct the max is 10ish. Lots of tour companies fill up an entire tour bus so it's a lot of cats to herd.

You traveled like a European would. It was mainly trains, and only had to be a bus in Umbria where there weren't trains.

The tour leader find great local spots for the group meal you have in every city. For example, the one restaurant in Florence was way off the beaten path, and we dined family style in a restaurant converted from a house. Really cool, homey dining experience not full of tourists.

The tour leader can help out with the unexpected such as translating at the pharmacy so I received the right prescription for a weird rash developing on my shin.

Wife and I have made several of these river trips! Very relaxing, beautiful areas, especially in the spring. Also might mix in a wine tasting stop or two. Some of the beer on those smaller river towns is truly outstanding, as well. Of course, it has been a loooong time since we did that and I suppose it could have changed a lot. Might pay to contact some local tourist info places in those areas for more up to date info. They used to have what we might call tourist assistance centers. Most certainly have internet/email contacts now as well.

I did exactly that in England. Got distracted and complacent and drifted into the right side of the road as habit. Luckily a very quiet section of road with no other traffic.

Why not do a tour of Europe? Buy a Eurail pass and set an itinerary. The European rail systems are very efficient and a great way to see Europe. Or maybe a river cruise down the Rhein or Danube?

We spent 10 days in Japan last Spring for the Cherry Blossom Festival. My wife and I loved it. We were able to visit Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

Lots of thought but what kind of trip are you looking for. Layed back and relaxing, some relaxing but willing to get out there to see some amazing sights, show me the amazing sight even if it means some effort to get there and around.

Relaxing, beautiful, warm water, warm weather, friendly people...paradise on earth.

Business travel took me to many locations around the world and personal travel took me to many more. I think you have to have some criteria about what might be the kind of trip and activities you find enjoyable.
I love relaxed island living so the maldives might be just the ticket, but you might go nuts. You might want night life somewhere...
But if you force me to pick a location that would be worth the effort to get to in general and can combine lots of various aspects of traveling I would go to australia/new zealand.

I have traveled Europe and the middle east and Rome is at the top of my list. I have been there 3 times and will go back again.

If you don't mind living out of a suitcase traveling on the train system to visit multiple locations is a great option or, I have yet to hear a negative review of the Viking river cruises.

Italy is amazing. Though I must highly suggest hitting Croatia and possibly Bosnia on the same trip.
We rented a van in Ancona Italy got on the ferry there to Split Croatia drove around Croatia then went to Medjugorje Bosnia.

We did the typical Venice, Rome, Bologna, all the big cities but my favorite place in Italy was Scanno it is in the Abruzzo region of Italy. It is a beautiful small quaint mountain lake town.
Lago Di Scanno is there which is a beautiful lake resort in the summer and ski resort in the winter.

In Scanno we stayed at the Park Hotel on the lake. It is at the bottom of the mountain where the town of Scanno is at the top so it is a bit of a trek up to town.

If I had to do an overseas trip again that would be it.

I have also been to the UK and the Caribbean. No rush to go back to either. Though a few other places are on the list to visit. Switzerland, Iceland, Australia.
