I'm retired now, but I used to have a total POS for a boss.

I'd piss him off all the time by saying:

"There's no reason for it, it's just company policy".

Walmart is famous/infamous for fighting lawsuits , they have a powerful legal department that is told/required to fight tooth and nail to get lawsuits dismissed. They are NOT nice.

I would imagine that Code of Conduct is You're supposed to be working, not videoing people ( especially if it makes the caliber of our "clientele" look bad, which in turn makes us look bad, which of course would come as a shock to absolutely no one who's ever even heard of Wal-Mart. lol).

depending on your job code, you would have to, or HR would,

sometimes management in these companies has to do stuff that they don't like, due the the ever expanding HR departments,

saying that as a Former Gro Biz Store Manager

I failed at being clear. Frown I meant I as in if it were up to me. Not I as in I'm a corporate drone, rather in this specific case, I as in I’m WalMart.

Yup, and the latter was probably more their intent than the former. Everybody's gotta get their views and likes.

Wal-Mart has EXCELLENT in-store loss prevention video that would have provided more than enough evidence for any LE investigation, and their loss prevention folks are well versed in working with LE. An employee on the floor creating a confrontation with the customer is not something the store needs, nor is helpful to any investigation.

We had a similar situation in a local retailer two weeks ago, and staff called 911 and kept eyes on the person until police arrived and were able to investigate. Turned out to be a misunderstanding that was resolved by calmly determining all the facts. No confrontation or drama necessary.

So you're not under video surveillance the entire time you're inside a WallyWorld?

The problems are:
  • I suspect confrontation is violaton of their code of conduct. The female genetic donor (i.e. not a real Mother) was trash, and the employee confronted her. Walmart has learned the hard lesson that their lowest common denominator customers will assault employees, other customers, LEOs, etc. The assault may be force (e.g. fists) or deadly force (e.g. knife).
  • I suspect videoing customers and posting to social media is violation of code of conduct.
  • As others have said, LEOs/CPS could've obtained video from Walmart security. More on this later.
  • I didn't hear the employee actually call the police (i.e. I believe another customer called the police). Frankly, I didn't see the employee do anything meaningful that would actually help the child. Watching fellow humans suffer or in danger while recording with your phone is an epidemic in the first world.

My view on the right thing:
  • Call police for welfare of unclothed child in below freezing weather and then be a good witness.
  • Let police/CPS obtain the video evidence from security. The video likely started outdoors and progressed through the store where they could show the child had bare skin outside and outdoor clothing didn't merely fall off the shopping cart while in the store.
  • Coach the employee, don't fire her. I bet if she saw security's video starting in parking lot and continuing through store she'd see how unnecessary her video was. Also, I'm pretty sure security could show her footage of their lowest common denominator customer assaulting an employee.

Having worked for old Wally for some time, I would agree that the employee's confronting of the customer is what most likely led to her termination. We were told in no uncertain terms that we were never to confront anyone for anything while on store property, from manner and appearance to theft of goods. Get a plate number, call the police, across the board.

Midnights at the beginning of the month were always a show. Sarcasm on/ Apparently EBT is only good for a couple days after the card loads... /sarcasm off.
