Three Generations of Service |
An unusual moment of seriousness from an inveterate wiseass: One of my standard replies to "How's it going?" is both tongue-in-cheek and a basic truism: "I'm eatin' regular and I got a warm place to sleep. Pretty much everything else is gravy." I try to remember that when I get in a pissy mood because I'm not driving a $70,000 pickup or some such. My second guiding aphorism is "Things don't make you happy. Choosing to be happy makes you happy." Too many people set what I call "happiness goals". For example, "I'll be happy when I'm making six figures." or "I'll be happy when I own my own home." or "I'll be happy when I can afford a new car." The problem with that is that "happy" becomes a moving target and you wind up dead before reaching it. Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

"Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans." -- John Lennon Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me. When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

So true. I read something similar last year: "get up, dress up, show up." Sometimes that's all it takes to make the difference. __________________________ "Trust, but verify."

that's just plain bananas! "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

"What do you want to avoid? Such an easy answer: sloth and unreliability. If you’re unreliable it doesn’t matter what your virtues are. You're going to crater immediately. Doing what you have faithfully engaged to do should be an automatic part of your conduct.
