I believe the news outlets are highlighting the 20 year old co-pilot simply because her story creates headlines.....Yes, she's young and has a social media presence. We haven't heard anything about the captain simply because she/he may not have a social media presence.

Just let the investigation unfold and we'll learn it was something quite ordinary.

Typically, a bachelor's degree is required (by the airline) for an airline job, as well as holding or being eligible at least a Restricted ATP certificate. The minimum age for the ATP is 21. Thus, she didn't yet qualify for an airline job.

Charters can be done under a different set of rules than the airlines, so the commercial certificate with instrument and multi-engine ratings is enough. The name of the game to get into the airlines is flight time. Especially the most relevant flight time such as jet and multiengine.

This FO looks like a go-getter who was building her qualifications.

A typical competitor to get a job like hers might be a college grad who then built whatever time was needed to get a charter/corporate job. That might be a 22 or 23 year old, and had worked teaching flying in a small Cessna. No difference from being 20 imho if the experience and training are comparable.

What else is new, right? Sensationalism sells. Roll Eyes Turns out, as posted in previous page, she earned her pilot license at 17. So, she at least had three years experience already.

And, one of my other "hobbies" is watching/listening to airlines disasters on YT. I have listened to countless last second audios, and in my opinion, this lady remained totally professional communicating with ATC. Only in the last few seconds, when inevitable death is coming at you head-on, that panic set in, wich is 100% understandable and no different from other last second audios.

I've read on another website that they had icing issues and/or elevator issues prior to the crash. It is truly a tragic event and happened relatively close to home.

She stated that they were having "moderate turbulence and icing" Or maybe she just said ice.

Very tragic. The young lady was impressive with her communication and calmness in that situation

That is not sufficient; for this particular flight, both pilots were required to have type rating for the Lear 60, per Part 135. I have not seen anything in any of the news reports that stated whether or not the young lady's Commercial certificate had the required type rating.

I'm wondering if the black box(s) survived that impact?

she was SIC, is that required if she's flying with a fully rated and certificate holding First..... the pilot was Jeff Gregory 55 years old...

She mentioned "clear ice." And she also said they were rising and dropping up to 700 feet. That sounds a bit more than moderate turbulence to me.

The reason we hear the young lady on the radio is the 55 year old captain was fighting to try and save the aircraft. I wish I hadn’t heard it. She was also likely relaying what the captain was calling out.

Per FAR 135, if the entire flight is not within the borders of the continental U.S., both the PIC and the SIC must have a type rating or equivalent training, shown on her pilot certificate.

Good info. It means she should have received good training in that aircraft, more than just an SIC 135 checkout.

I believe she was giving the rate of climb/descent in the up/down drafts. Not an amount of altitude.

I heard the audio yesterday shortly after the accident happened. Someone at ATC is likely to hang for releasing it, IF they were the source.

I saw a speculation video by an experienced Navy pilot who theorized that they penetrated that core of the rapidly building t-storm they were warned about and that precipitated the departure from controlled flight.

At the altitude they were flying, there is a small difference between stall speed and overspeed. Coffin Corner.

Whatever happened, it is a sad ending to the flight.

The ATC frequencies are publicly known, and neither Encrypted, nor Trunked Digital Frequencies either. Anyone with a Scanner or Radio that can tune those bands can listen to them. There are also Phone & Computer Apps that provide ATC Audio as well. Nothing nefarious or untoward occurred to make that ATC Audio public.

When the requirement for both pilots to be type rated for international operations came about the FAA created the SIC type rating, which requires more than the basic part 61 aircraft familiarization, but less than your standard PIC type rating. It gave operators a cheaper/easier way to comply especially for less experienced pilots.

I checked the records database and this young lady had a PIC type rating, with the limitation that she would need 25 hours of supervised operating experience as a Captain before being allowed to act as PIC. That’s because she undoubtedly did the training entirely in a simulator, and doesn’t have enough other qualifying experience to avoid the limitation.

All that said, and this is not a criticism necessarily, she was qualified on paper but lacked real world experience. And the Learjet 60 is not an “entry level” jet by any means. But it’s common for particularly smaller companies to hire less experienced pilots, because let’s face it they’re much more likely to work less desirable schedules for less money than someone with more time. And while her lack of experience could possibly have played a role in how things turned out I also wouldn’t say it was a primary cause of what happened.

There have been a lot of changes since my 135 jet days in the mid 90's! We were chartered freight and operated in the USA, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. SIC checkout was minimal. Ground school was quite good on aircraft systems and FARs. But the checkout consisted of about 10 hours flying with a check airman, being allowed to actually fly only when there was no revenue on board (Part 91 legs).

Requiring 25 hours of IOE before she could act as captain does not imply she was trained solely in the sim, though it is actually an advantage in many ways. That presumes a solid sim training program and not a rushed minimal syllabus. She should have seen high altitude upset training in the sim.

Why she had the PIC type rating may be simply to reduce training costs for the company.

With about 6 months experience she probably didn't have many actual flight hours in that aircraft or environment. What's key is the captain's experience and the corporate culture. There's no reason her age or low experience should be a safety threat when she is the first officer.
