My son is a "gig" worker as an unemployed contractor. In early August he was hit by a car while riding his bike, shattering his leg requiring much surgery and extensive hospitalization and rehab. During that time, he also had spinal surgery and developed an infection closely resembling TB that had him hospitalized in isolation for over two months. He was onlu discharged APR 23 and is in no condition to work for quite a while. Is he qualified for any Federal unemployment assistance?

Unless something has changed unemployment is for those who can work but are laid off from their job and have an employment history to use to calculate benefits. I would look to see if there is some short term disability from the auto insurance or another source. I'm alright it's the rest of the world that's all screwed up!

Social security disability if he has work hours and meets criteria. SSA if he does not. Contact your Senator or Congressman. I assume whoever hit him has no liability coverage or that it has been exhausted. Good luck. Probably qualifies for food stamps.

Every state has it's own requirements. Here are NCs https://des.nc.gov/employers/u...loyment-requirements If he worked within the last 12 months on W-2 he may be covered. It can complicated if we was 1099. I would advise applying, all they can do is say no. He needs to be able and willing to work to get benefits. If not other programs are available.
