I went to Half Price books today during lunch. In the rear of the store is the section where they process the incoming books and price them accordingly. There was apppx 8-10 employees behind this counter. All but one was wearing a black surgical type mask. Is this some statement? It was weird. The checkout clerk at the front of the store didnt have one on though. Thoughts?
Here's a theory hypothesis. They wear masks because they're afraid of conservatives and/or the un-mRNA'd.
One of my daughters and her husband are, unfortunately, in the whackadoodle TDS progressive camp. They have 5 kids (now age 7 to 18), who they have kept quite isolated since early 2020. Every time I've seen them, including in photos, most of the kids are wearing masks. The 18 yr old is the exception.
They take the kids to Pride events, fly the stupid "In this home we believe..." flag, etc.
This summer they moved to a very liberal east coast enclave. Now I never see any masks in any photos. Pride flags, yes. No-Kings protest pictures, yes. Idiotic TDS social media posts, yes.
But no more masks now that they're in a like-minded community.

I work at Half Price Books. Mask wearing is left up to the individual's preference. Many of my coworkers are of the younger generation and can be more sensitive to their surroundings, e.g., using sanitizer after handling everything, masks, gloves, etc. Some, okay, a lot, of those book buys that come in are absolutely disgusting, covered with silverfish and spiders and dirt and mold. Our staff runs about maybe 1/4 wearing masks, sometimes dependent on whether the wearer is feeling like they might be coming down with something. The black masks just might be what the store was offering to its employees. We used to have those, but now we have the light blue ones.
Wow, 8-10 employees at the buy counter? That was us in the pre-COVID days. Now, that's our entire staff!

like mentioned by others, virtue signaling and holding on to one of the pillars of liberalism. I still frequently see mask wearing by employees and others that are almost always an easy bet for super lefty politics.

I am not a Germaphobe, but with all the mold I have seen on some books, I would probably be wearing a mask and gloves also. All the older camera equipment I purchase goes in a UVC light box I built and then in airtight cases with desiccant.

IF the employees were also wearing gloves, and they take off the masks after inspecting the books, then I give them a pass. But if not, if they wear masks all the time in public, they are part of this demographic, it is part of their uniform:

If you'd seen the inside of peoples homes that most law enforcement does, you'd wear a hazmat suit before touching things coming out of other peoples homes.....
We had a older woman that brought pot luck dishes to company lunches. One of the employees went to check on her one time, the report back was "don't ever eat anything she brings to the pot luck", for someone that looked clean, nice clean clothes, bathed you would have crapped a brick if you saw the inside of the house...
