I know it's 9 months away, but I'm in planning mode. In all likelihood, our daughter will be shooting in the Junior Olympic Target Nationals in Raleigh, NC June 11-15. We now know it will be at the WRAL Soccer Complex. Looks like it's on the northeast side of town off of I-540 and US-1.

So can anybody tell me anything about the area? Recommendations on where to stay? Obviously we want to be close to the tournament site. Anything to do in the area when we have some down time?

Thanks in advance.

My daughter can deflate your daughter's soccer ball.

Traffic in that area is horrible during rush hours.

My favorite local restaurant is Shuckers Oyster Bar a few miles north in Wake Forest. Great Seafood and reasonable prices. There are tons of restaurants in that north Raleigh area on or near capitol blvd (US-1). The twisted fork is another good one that's at the mall just south of 540.

Downtown has some great museums. falls lake is nearby and there are lots of trails to explore.

Avoid hotels on Capital Blvd (US-1) south of the Triangle Town Center mall at I-540 and down to I-440. The hotels at US-1 and 440 were great if you wanted drugs and hookers about 10 years ago when I worked in the area.

Linky. The "set up" there was an ongoing business ignored by hotel management from what I remember at the time.

Not a whole lot, but I know you can play golf, get shot at, and be in the middle of a little tornado... all in the same hour. It was an interesting day. Pretty country.

There is a very nice mall / shopping area nearby that will be a good place to hang out in your down-time: Triangle Town Center Mall.

Highly recommend you stay at the Triangle Town Center Courtyard Marriott which is like 2 miles from the WRAL Soccer Park.

There is also a two-story Dick's Sporting Goods at Triangle Town Center in case you need archery supplies:

Being that it's at a soccer complex you need to take a lot of back up arrows as that will be a target rich environment. :-)
My family has been in the area since about 2000.
The traffic/road system annoys the crap out of me. I joke that "you need to take a piss, that'll be a 45 minute drive".
For that reason I really don't care for the area.

A good friend of mine just bought a house literally right across the street from there.

Milton's Pizza and Pasta has great pizza and has an awesome lunch buffet (with a lot more than pizza on it) and isn't far from there.

If you're wanting to spend some money on food, Angus Barn is the local "must go to" type place.

The closer you get to down town Raleigh, the more ghetto it gets. As others have said, stay around 540 or north towards Wake Forest.
