Wife's mother lives nearby. Lives alone. Is in her eighties and was doing well. We had just checked on her Sat. late afternoon and she was doing great.

She lives near some of our other family members. Dropped my wife off at their place to check on them. Ran an errand and decided to stop and check on my MIL. Upon arriving found her on the floor in very bad condition. Basically clinging to life. It was that worse case scenario. She had been there for quite awhile. Most likely hours. She was somewhat able to communicate, but barely. Had head trauma from the fall and most likely other injuries as well.
Called emergency services immediately. A neighbor works as an emt and heard the call out and came right over. Minutes later the ambulance arrived and transported her to our local hospital. She had a severe stroke and is now in comfort care.

Wife is pretty upset for obvious reasons.

Would appreciate prayers.

I am grateful to those who are dedicated to help those who really need help.

Thanks all.

I'm so sorry.

So glad you stopped.

Words can't make this any better, but you, and your family will be on my mind and included in my prayers for the next couple of days.

You've got a lot of praying friends here. We'll have you well covered.

You were guided to check on her and thank god you did. I hope she makes a good recovery. She and your family are in my thoughts!

Yep.

Falls are deadly for the elderly. Bones are brittle, don't well as quickly, etc.

Take this opportunity to play what-if scenarios for after she heals up whether she can still live by herself. Anything other than the status quo which can't continue indefinitely are easier said than done.

Good luck.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Prayers said and sent.

If she returns home, one option for you to consider is one of the lifesaver buttons. However, be sure to get one that’s also motion activated. The reason I say that is my parents were home alone, and my father tended to sleep during the day, but was up at night. During the daytime, my mother went out to get the mail and while negotiating the first step of the porch with her walker face planted down to the ground, laying on top of her button. She laid there for hours before neighbor saw her.

In other words, she was laying on top of the button and couldn’t press it.

The buttons that detected motion were not made, until after both my parents moved to assisted living and then eventually a nursing home

As already noted, falls for older folks are very deadly. I've had a few, but have been blessed that I wasn't injured too badly.

Prayers for comfort for your whole family, and for healing for her from TampaBay.

This is a good idea, or, an Apple Watch, the later models have fall detection and will call EMS if you don't respond to the watch.

We got this for my dad who's in his later 80's he was falling some in the house, turned out to be a 90% clogged artery, once fixed he got a lot of his strength back.

He did fall once and I was there, no damage but the watch fall detection did go off...

Best wishes to you and your family ORC for a good outcome with your MIL

Fall detection was introduced with the Series 4 Watch. It will call 911 and will also call any (all) people in your contacts list, who are designated as emergency contacts.

My mother-in-law suffered the same event three months ago. She was on the floor for quite a while when a neighbor heard her calling for help. She’d had a stroke too which caused the fall.

Sorry to learn about yours.

Checking in this morning as I'm drinking coffee and thinking about you.

You have friends here. We're still praying.
