Congressman Van Drew: Republicans Lost, Democrats Lost, but the American People Lost Most—No Member of Congress Should Be Paid During This Shutdown

Washington, DC -Today, Congressman Van Drew released the following statement calling on both parties to immediately end the government shutdown, reopen the country, and put the American people first.

"There are no winners here," said Congressman Van Drew. "Democrats should have already passed this routine continuing resolution. It is Joe Biden's own bill, for God's sake. And Republicans—you cannot just let healthcare subsidies expire and have nothing ready to replace them. Let's stop this madness. Good people are being hurt. The country being open is not some political talking point. These are people's lives, paychecks, and peace of mind. And while this goes on, no Member of Congress should be getting paid. Not one. That is why I have forfeited my paycheck since the beginning of the shutdown, and it is why I am cosponsoring legislation to stop Members of Congress from collecting a paycheck during any shutdown. We should feel the same pain that hardworking Americans are feeling right now. Maybe then we would get this done a lot faster."
