Hopefully you already know who Temple Grandin is, but if not there is a wonderful Hollywood movie made about her. It’s a true story about an autistic woman who changed cattle feedlot management and slaughter.

It’s also the story of insight, brilliance and an unwasted life despite every excuse.


I’m posting this other bit below - even though it’s an hour and three minutes long.

It is so straightforward and sensible that I thought y’all would really enjoy. Many of you may resonate. I certainly do.

Great video.

I was introduced to her (virtually) by way of the movie with Claire Daines. I've seen several videos of Ms. Grandin since, and she's fascinating to listen to. A truly brilliant mind.

Temple Grandin is very inspiring.
I met her through my job many years ago, wow, I wish I had a video of that presentation.
I knew her uncle, he was a vet specializing in cattle and horses many years ago in Springerville AZ His name was George Grandin, a great guy.

Very familiar with her because of my career in grazing management, and made a point of watching the movie. She’s an AnimalSci professor at CSU, unless she’s retired since the last time I looked her up.

Not to take anything away from her work, but grazing management was started by Rodale back in the early 80's which is now Rodale Institute:

I saw the movie long time ago it was great

Rodale.... he created Prevention magazine. No clue about New Farm.

The Organic Gardening magazine also was another of their publications. New Farm was only published maybe 8 or 10 years in the 80's. I assume there was not enough interest.

Dr. Grandin is one of the pioneers of low-stress livestock handling; remember she’s a professor of Animal Sciences, not Rangeland Management.

The Society for Range Management is the international professional society that I was a member of throughout my career; it was established in 1948. There have been many different grazing systems developed over the years. The appropriate system is dependent upon many factors, among them: climate (Zimbabwe or Montana), land ownership (private or public land), resources (both natural and financial), access to water, topography, etc. etc.

No one person “started grazing management.” I never heard of Jerome Rodale in college studying Rangeland Management, from seminars at annual SRM meetings, or in technical papers circulated within the Range program of the Forest Service. As near as I can tell from my research, Rodale was born in Manhattan and developed an interest in organic farming for personal health reasons. I can find no evidence of formal education in any science.

I saw and heard Temple Grandin speak at a seminar once. Captivating.

Your exposure was all well and good.

But Rodale served the public with his publications of Organic Gardening and New Farm Magazines which reached a lot of people compared to the Society for Range Management. My farmer friends used Rodale's grazing management in the use of paddocks to increase production. At a later date, they even added sheep to further increase production of the land.

I traveled a lot in my job and been in every state except Wyoming. I always visited the gun shops and stores that specialized in books and magazines. One of the largest book/magazine stores was in Marquette, MI and it was huge. I always wondered how such a large store could be supported by the local population. I have since forgotten the name of the store.

41, suggest you do a little reading on André Voisin and Allan Savory. The topic is Dr. Temple Grandin and “the autistic mind”. TMats is correct about her areas of discipline. (I know CSU well. Even the vet school and the equine center.)

I agree we got side tracked.

Dr. Amen noted in one of his books that autism was caused by low levels of vitamin D3. I have to think other factors are involved. My cousin use to teach autism kids and one family had three kids with autism.

She has a lot of brain scans of her own head compared to “normal“. Interesting stuff on the connective wiring between the various parts of the brain.

Brain scans are interesting and you have probably seen some of Dr. Amen's work on PBS involving brain scans.

I agree that it leans toward genetic versus food deficiency. My cousin also noted that some of the kids were very smart for their age. They ranged in age from 5 to 17 with one teacher per kid on average.
