Our 11 month old Rottweiler was at training last month when I received a call from the trainer advising me that his rear leg had started to swell, and he would be taking him to the vet. After Xray and examination, no internal damage was discovered on the leg. The leg continued to swell and grew to at least 3 times its size and the skin began to decay. We ended up taking him to University of TN Veterinary for further examination.

They advised us that he had been bitten by an unknown insect or spider and that they need to conduct a culture test to determine which antibiotic to continue with. They then removed all of the decaying skin, and I have to be honest, I thought he was going to lose his leg. The Vet then told me the best we could do was to keep putting Manuka honey on it every day and to change the wrap everyday as well. They were also not sure if the leg would heal. I had no idea what Manuka honey was or how the heck it could help an injury like this.

Fast forward two weeks and neither my wife and I, the trainer or the vet can believe the progress the injury has made. I have to say this New Zealand Manuka honey has done miracles to the injuries on his leg. I still can't believe I have never heard of it. Unbelievable results.

Below are pics of the injury at its worst and a pic of it taken yesterday. There were two other areas on the leg that looked just as bad but they are just about healed.

I've heard of manuka honey, but never knew it had medicinal use. AI says it has advantages over Neosporin, such as being effective against antibiotic-resistant microbes and actually promoting tissue healing.

I believe I will order some. Expensive, but could be worth it.

I ordered off of their page on Amazon

New Zealand Honey Company. It is expensive but nothing compared to losing his leg or skin grafts.

The other amazing part is his demeanor during this whole process. From day one, he will lay on his side and literally start falling asleep while we change the bandage. We are very lucky as far as that is concerned. He has the best personality.

Did the vet recommend that specific brand, or was it your own choice?

Timely post.

My bloodhound has a similar bite on her back leg joint. Just came up quick. Been to the vet twice now for antibiotics, creams and anti itch pills.

On the second rd now. Was using a pool noodle collar which wasn't keeping her from licking it.

If this doesn't work vet mentioned surgery as next move.

Went with the lampshade cone like yours which is working to stop the licking.

Just ordered some Manuka honey. Certainly sounds promising. May end up with surgery to removed the dead tissue.

Any raw honey will work in a pinch as they all have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Manuka does contain more, but as I recall it can be somewhat spendy and it's authenticity can be difficult to discern.

To be honest, I'm a little surprised that a veterinarian would not prescribe antibiotics for an obviously infected wound.

Just keep in mind that there are different grades for their honey. Some are supposed to be better for healing wounds. I bought the 20+UMF/ 829+ MGO.
I can definitely say that it worked.

Mustang Pa Pa, they definitely had to remove the dead tissue at which point it actually looked worse than the worst pic I posted, but they said they needed to do that for everything else to work.

Gustofer, he had been taking antibiotics since day one and is still on them. The culture exam was able to tell them which antibiotic to switch him to. Sorry if I was not clear on that.

Costco carries it in their stores, and almost certainly more likely to be real than similar from Amazon. Buy it today, apply it today.

Wdd thanks for posting the numbers for what you used. What I ordered was a little lower.
I will order the stronger stuff.
Hoping to avoid the surgery but really expecting that it will need to be done.

We had a followup appt for Thurs but its forecasting snow and ice so we rescheduled for Monday.

All raw honey is antibiotic. It also never goes bad, it may crystallize, but it won't spoil.

How is Manuka honey any different from your local raw honey?

Wow, that first picture is panic level for me and disheartening. But I'm glad the honey worked.

Yes, I actually knew that all honey does have antibiotic properties. However, apparently Manuka honey is significantly stronger, containing unique components such as Methylglyoxal (MGO), a powerful antibiotic and anti-inflammatory compound. Certified Manuka come with an MGO rating, with higher concentrations meaning (way) higher prices.

I am having issues with gastritis, and I'm hoping this will help.
