I remember from ASP's instructor course that ASP had a separate course on crowd control as well. At one time anyways. I seem to recall Monadnock had something as well.

Good suggestion. LVMPD seems really excellent at dealing with large crowds without creating/feeding drama.

They still have trouble with subduing single individuals without lethal force but crowds they have down pat Big Grin

"The designer of the gun had clearly not been instructed to beat about the bush. 'Make it evil,' he'd been told. 'Make it totally clear that this gun has a right end and a wrong end. Make it totally clear to anyone standing at the wrong end that things are going badly for them. If that means sticking all sort of spikes and prongs and blackened bits all over it then so be it. This is not a gun for hanging over the fireplace or sticking in the umbrella stand, it is a gun for going out and making people miserable with." -Douglas Adams

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all. -Mencken

the tear gas gets everyone in the meantime, most of whom have done nothing but stand there with stupid slogans on poster board.

Tear gas isn't deployed until after an order to disperse is given. Standing there with your poster board is illegal after that point and you deserve what you get.

My go-to for this type of information is the National Center for Spectator Sports, (NCS4) at the University of Southern Mississippi and Campus Safety Magazine. Here's an article and podcast from CS that will get you started. You mentioned crowd management, not riot control, so I would begin with a flow approach not a defensive approach. Hope this helps.

Officer mounted draft horses (and draft crosses) are quite effective at crowd control.
