Il Cattivo"Just because" is a perfectly acceptable answer to me, and where that's the case I'm generally too lazy to ask. Then again, I've spent several years in places where asking a question like that could win you a long boring lecture on one social activist cause or another.
FWIW, "tact" sounds like the right answer to me. If you ever happen to get a conversation going with a woman who has that kind of dye job, then either she may happen to mention it or you may wind up feeling comfortable asking. You might ask other women as well, since that should take any confrontational element out of it. Come to think of it, do you know any friends of any women with weird-dyed hair?

V-Tail,
I'm guessing you don't have any problem at all remembering back that far.

JupiterI don't really have a problem with it.
Some people can pull it off. Others, not so much.
Regardless, it would be a boring place if it weren't for these freaks.

pedropcolaUnless you have amazing tact, yes it will come across as rude. It’s like your wife asking you if that’s really what you are going to wear today.

patwSome of the colors look really nice if it fits the person, like the platinum color some women use/get now. I don't care for the crazy colors-green,purple,etc., but it is their choice and if they are happy, well so be it. I only compliment someone with what I prefer/like but won't tell someone I don't like their choice and I don't ask why they did it.

PrefontaineYes it’s rude as has been said. It’s also a flag to me. One, you either are so desperate for attention you are going to extremes with the hair coloring. Two, well if we shack up, I don’t want to be paying for that. My wig splitter tells me how much all that shit costs and it’s expensive. Three, I’m a big fan of the carpet matching the drapes.

sns3guppyNever ask a woman's age.
Never ask if she colors her hair.
Never lookin her purse.
To compliment a woman's hair is just fine, as long as your wife doesn't hear you say it...

bettysnephewWhen I was younger and had hair it was a natural red as had most of my mothers' 9 brothers and sisters and the majority of my cousins. I remember all the ribbing I got for it, some of it downright nasty. I have noticed in the last few years that red shades have come back into vogue for many ladies. If I notice a woman with a natural looking color of red, I will mention that when I had hair it was that color and looks very nice on her. I never ask if it is natural but can often tell by skin tones that don't fit the image. Those of us that had red hair and endured the torture back when you were the odd ones can usually tell the natural from dyed, but some of them are very good.

Spiff_P239I also agree that it’s rude, the same way it’s rude to ask someone why they would want to cover their bodies with tattoos. I have no problem with people asking me the meaning behind my tattoos; that’s completely different.

I just want to be clear about this. We're not talking about back hair. I'm sure he has plenty of that.

This thread reminds me of the time a co-worker walked into the break room and asked a lady when was her baby due. Her response was

mac_220Hey,
It's totally fine to be curious about why someone chooses a particular hair color, but it's good to approach the topic with sensitivity.
