This has been posted here before. Storytelling like this and old guys like this are a couple of the reasons Texas will always be special to me.

Enjoy

In every little town in Texas you will find a cafe or diner where there is a parking lot with many pickups parked at about 6:30 in the morning. That is where you still go to hear those stories. That man so reminds me of my Daddy and his friends. I sure miss them.

Me either! It's a classic way to end a such recollections of unbelievably funny events, and somewhat common of that generation.

It brings a smile to my face, and reminds me of a World War II Veteran that served as a tour guide at the National Air and Space Museum at Dulles. He had MANY tales to tell as he led our group of Boy Scouts that took a spring break trip to Washington DC through the museum, and at the end of every one of those stories he exclaimed, "And that's a true story!"

Big Grin Big Grin
That reminds me of the friend that made nitro in school and used it to blow up a large rock ledge when the river was drained.

We also made cannons out of 1 1/2 inch pipe slipped over 1 1/4 inch pipe for extra protection. A D-cell battery fit perfect and could hear the air sucking as it slide down the barrel. A cherry bomb would shoot it out of sight. Those were the days of Mike Fink, King of the River. Big Grin

Listening to that man tell that story, I could almost close my eyes and hear my grandfather. Only a real southerner can properly tell a story. It’s an art form that first requires a lifetime of shenanigans to generate material.

When I was around 14 or so, I helped my neighbor clear a garden spot with dynamite. One stick would launch a large stump 15 feet in the air. Seven sticks in a cistern would be impressive.

Funny! I'm sure it happened exactly as he said, and I doubt it was the only time someone has attempted it.

It reminds me of that old joke about Jethro, a country boy who, while cleaning out his septic tank managed to slip and fall in (that stuff is slippery, you know). He immediately started shouting "Fire! Fire! Fire!" When his neighbor came running over to investigate, he said, "What the hell Jethro, there ain't no damn fire! Jethro replied, "I din't' figure nobody would come if I was yelling Shit! Shit! Shit!"
