As stated in my hospital thread my brother took over raising my 10-month-old labrador (he had just lost his dog a few months back). It became very clear I no longer have the strength or stamina to do so. That said, I found myself with no pet to care for the first time in decades and did not like it one bit. So, I thought how about a cat! So off to the shelter I went. I just sat in a chair and this brown tabby jumped in my lap and settled, so I brought her home. Meet Chloe, a 5-year-old domestic shorthair in the shelter because her previous owner had to go to a nursing home. Being not a kitten, she was there for a while without being adopted. After a week now, her and I are best buds, and she's turned into a lap cat. First few days were challenging. She wouldn't eat and just hid. Now she sleeps at the foot of the bed and wakes me at 4 AM for food. (we're working on that). Glad we can keep each other company.

Oh, and the dog is thriving in his new digs, although, he and the robot vacuum have gotten into it a few times.

I was ignorant and would have never considered adopting anything other than a kitten but back in the year before covid I had a momma have kittens twice in our window well before I could catch her (very trap shy) and her second litter.

After homing the 2nd litter and getting her fixed, she had grown accustom to the 2 hots and a cot and has become very affectionate and a little bit of a queen.

All she wants is tummy rubs. Momma Kiki says "HI".

Congrats!

After spending most of my life swearing I would never have a cat in my home, my teenage daughter managed to change all that almost 9 years ago. We added a shelter kitten that grew up with our Labrador Retrievers and now mothers over a Cane Corso, and thinks she is a dog. She is vocal, affectionate and comes when called, just like a dog. She can really hack me off at times, but she has stolen my heart.

I can’t imagine being without a pet. Sometimes they can be the reason you get of bed in the morning (hopefully not at 430am, though).
I’m glad you were flexible enough to adapt to a different type of pet to love. I have a sister who refuses to get a cat. She’s always had a dog, but she cannot care for a dog and a cat can pretty much take care of itself if given the proper environment - I wish she would change her mind.

An option could be a feeder w/a timer. Gradually change the time.

Then DST will end and mess things up all over again.

Congratulations on your new housemate. I miss having a cat in the house and will probably be visiting the shelter soon myself.

I’m a cat dad to 13 inside cats (all rescues or abandoned cats we took in), 6 outside cats (no more room inside). Cats are cool!

Animals………pick us!

I tip my hat to you. If I could afford to send you a pallet of kitty litter, I would.
Much respect.
I know you're getting much love too in return.

Thanks for all the well wishes guys. Chloe's doing great and finally eating regularly. Unfortunately, she has not learned to tell time yet. It's 3:30 AM and we're up after a half hour of putting it off. Going to try to start backing off daytime feeding a little, so she'll eat more before bed. We'll figure it out. I'm just glad she's eating for now.

Not sure how I'd do with 19 cats, but I know I sure couldn't afford to feed them. Good on you, my friend. And yep, cats are cool Cool
