So I didn't touch my checking acct. I Iowa for 15 years.
No addition of funds no check cashing no nothing.

And then a family member sent me a personal check from the same bank.
I was going to add the total check amount to this unused acct.

Upon visiting the local branch , they said my acct. Was closed and the money was sent to the state of Iowa.

After four months of attempting to get it back , I've come to the conclusion that it unobtainable. Through any one , anywhere.

Now five months later, after speaking with numerous older folks, I find this is not uncommon at all.

In fact it happens daily.
I urge you NOT to go to the state , but check your bank accounts.

Going to the state ( Iowa anyway ) mess you are s.o.l.

You have to get it from the bank BEFORE it gets sent.

No , I am not contacting a lawyer for $95.00

I assume you've already used the Iowa State Treasurer's website for unclaimed funds?

I used the Arkansas version a while back. It was super simple and easy.

This is quite common. If an account is not used it goes dormant and the banks close them. Typically unused funds revert to the state as "unclaimed property". You should have been sent notices from the bank that if you do not use the account within X number of days it will be closed and funds sent to the state.

When Washington Mutual went belly up and Chase picked up the pieces, they absorbed the balance I had in my WAMU account. It was somewhere less than 100.00 and not a very active account. I used it only occasionally to make transfers to one of their other account holders more expeditious. But, it felt real greasy to have that balance absorbed like that.

One of the Yooper banks I use and maintain a large balance in emails me every 45 days and warns the account is going into dormant status.
And its an interest bearing account! So, when I asked how an account could be dormant that is actively generating interest, I was told "we dont count interest gain as activity on the account"!

So when they threaten me with the dormant thing, I just drop by and deposit 5 bucks to reset the clock.

As said, pretty common.
When I was working I wrote a collection of programs to find 'abandoned property' in our financial system and then send the owners letters that the money would be turned over to the state if they didn't claim it.
