It originated from Japanese anime fans, and was then adopted by a wide swath of other nerdy subcultures, including stuff like gamers, streamers, cosplayers, and yes, even furries. It then branched out further into fairly common usage in lots of places on the internet and social media, among teens/young adults of all flavors.

All indications point to this killer being one of those "chronically online" types, steeped in teen/young adult interweb lore/slang. So it's not surprising that he'd be familiar with that term, even if there ends up being zero link to furries.
