A man's got to know his limitations ![]() |
My refridgerator is on it's last legs and so I am looking for a new one. Just the regular top freezer two door nothing fancy or smart. With my friends that have bought recently the fridge compartment will not get below 37 degrees on the coldest setting. I like mine just barely above freezing. Do they make such a thing anymore? Came with the house, but our patio fridge gets cold enough to put frost on cut fruit. Traditional top freezer 2-door. I think it's a GE, but not sure how old it is. The Enemy's gate is down.

A Roper fridge came with the cabin when we bought the place and we really like it. It's at least 22 years old now and it's been great. It will put a layer of frost on the items on the bottom shelf if we dial it down, but otherwise it keeps the beer icy cold like we like it. Not only does Roper have the simple top freezer/lower refrigerator configuration you're looking for, ours handles the numerous power outages that happen almost weekly without issues. If this one ever dies, I'll buy another to replace it. "The Truth, when first uttered, is always considered heresy."

Have a small (about 12 cu ft) Whirlpool refrigerator & freezer in our utility room that will get below freezing in the frig section. If I set the frig thermostat to a colder setting than midscale, the wife starts complaining that the lettuce is frozen. That’s a clue.

I have a GE side by side refrigerator/freezer, not smart, not fancy, the only “features” is has are ice/water in the door and a digital temperature control for both the refrigerator and freezer. My refrigerator side is set at 33 degrees, and if I put something all the way in the back of the refrigerator, it usually freezes.

We have a Frigidaire FFTR2021TW5 Freezer on top. Works great. Definitely gets close to freezing in the refrigerator section. Ours is in the garage and it has not been a. Issue in very hot or cold. My Frigidaire side by side (10 yr old) digital setting goes down to 33. My wife likes her Dr Peppers really really cold so that is where we have it set. I know if left undisturbed in the back corner for a few days a jug of Ice Tea will freeze solid. Have the freezer set to -5 for faster Ice making. Used to have it on 0. Endeavor to persevere.

Thanks for the input guys. Looks like I will be getting a new Frigidaire almost identical to my old one just 20 years newer. And believe it or not, it is $127 cheaper. Your should update the post to " Has anyone bought a recent refrigerator new ". Not sure any of the new ones get reliably cold. MY GE doesn't. It is two. The Midea we bought same time did not either

My GE has the freezer on the bottom, two doors for the refrigerator and is also set at 1°F and 35°F respectively. ____________________________ NRA Life Member, MGO Annual Member

Especially with new “energy efficient” models the temp limits might be set higher than desired by the factory in order to meet the published numbers. A lot of times you can “hack” it by learning how to get into the service menu and change the settings. Should be able to find a tutorial on YouTube for just about any make/model. There are a bunch of videos on Youtube of restored fridges from the 40's-70's, some of those things get really cold and have better features than modern ones, like rotating shelves. And the styles are like classic cars, really tempted to find me one, probably not that great on energy usage but who cares we are going to have plenty of cheap energy soon.

Just a quick update for you all, my new Frigidaire that is the old style top freezer with an analog temp dial you twist has no problem getting to 34 in the fridge and -5 in the freezer. Now with my friend that has a Frigidaire Gallery side by side with the electronic pad it will not get below 37 and I was unable to find a hack to fix this, guess my google-fu is not strong. Any help in this matter would be appreciated. "But, as luck would have it, he stood up. He caught that chunk of lead." Abut a year ago, we bought two Whirlpools, one a side by side refrigerator with a chest freezer on the bottom and, just for drinks, etc, a smaller Whirlpool top freezer. Both of them get really, really cold. We've been pretty satisfied with Whirlpool. Our last side by side lasted some 20 years, before starting to have problems, the one before that-20 years and still going strong when we sold the old house including appliances and moved to our current home. The only non-Whirlpool we have is the dishwasher, a Kitchenaid, which I bought 13 years ago because we couldn't get a Whirlpool at the time. It has been perfect, too. BobThis message has been edited. Please provide the Model Number of the Gallery fridge. Best to snap a photo of the label and post it here. Label is inside on the LEFT wall about eyeball height.
