I’ve been shopping for a sous vide device, and wonder what the reasonable set up is.

The devices come with various features, like wifi and bluetooth. I’m not a bluetooth person. Are there qualify devices with neither? What use is there for these?

Anova seems to be the top of the line. What brands are good ones other than Anova?

JALLEN, I have the DorkFood sous vide apparatus. I've been using it for years now and have no reservations regarding its use/simplicity.

check out www.dorkfood.com

The Dorkfood uses your current slow cooker (Crockpot) and turns it into an excellent and inexpensive sous vide cooker. It is quite simple and a good value.

I just thought of one possible caveat. I use a traditional (non-electronic) slow cooker. Mine has an old fashioned low/medium/high selector knob and nothing else. A friend of mine said his fancy electronic slow cooker was not compatible with the DorkFoods adapter.

I just bought the Anova. Haven't yet had a chance to use it. IIRC it was on sale for $85. Found it on Amazon.

So they do make one. Amazon must not know that.

Where did you find it?

The Anova is very popular.

The advantage to using Bluetooth or Wireless is that you don't have to hover over the unit to monitor. The wireless, once configured, actually allows you to make changes when away from the house.

The Bluetooth unit is currently on sale at their web site for $99 ($50 off the normal price). While it has a smaller heating element than the wireless unit, it should still work quite well for you. If you watch their web site, I'm guessing that they will have the wireless one on sale prior to the holiday season concluding.

I think you have my contact information - just give me a shout, and I'll give you some suggestions for the unit, container, and insulation sheets.

I've been using the Anova for a couple years and it's on sale very often for 99 bucks. Mine has wifi but honestly I don't remember ever using that feature.

I bought it before the blue tooth model was released

Latest bluetooth model is $99 on their website and free shipping, looks like an offer for an additional $20 off by signing up on the email list, which often has good recipe ideas

The original units were more commercial (the Precision Cooker Pro and the One), and had no remote control.

The Bluetooth was their first personal model, and the WiFi followed later. I managed to get the WiFi model off the Amazon Treasure Truck last month. Anova then had a big sale right before Thanksgiving.

I now have both the Bluetooth and WiFi units.

I guess there is no plain model offered by Anova. I really cannot see a use for bluetooth. Our phones and iPads have it but have never been used. Our Lexus (Lexi?) both have it, unused.

Any other brands worth considering? I’m not a natural world class cheapskate like my little brother, I have to work at it, but I do appreciate frugality.

I think the bluetooth aspect is to appease the tech folks. I'm sure the dial works fine still to set and leave alone. I never really understood what the function would be, unless people set it up in the morning before work then turn it on from the office so dinners ready when they get home (I'd forget to do so..lol)

I never use the BT or wifi on mine. I turn it on and then put in the meat. Pull meat out later, sear on a hot cast iron skillet, then eat. Easy peasy.

Yep. No need to use bluetooth. But if you want a timed cook, it's MUCH easier to setup something with a 4-5" touchscreen than 1-2 buttons that you have to push repeatedly....

The anova works & at ~$80 will probably appeal to the cheapskate in you. You might even use the bluetooth and *gasp* put your old fart syndrome in remission Wink

The Anova units don't require the use of either wireless technology. They are built-in, but the units WILL function fully from the panel on it.

Is this true?

quote:
Anova changed the app to require a login just to cook a meal. They are apparently more interested in mining data than pleasing their customers. I bought the Bluetooth version so I could monitor it, but now the app requires a login, and I object to logging in just to monitor this expensive device. I can't recommend it any more. Would give it ZERO STARS if possible!

A customer review on the Amazon website.

They did do that for the WIFI unit, but not the Bluetooth. In order for the WIFI to work remotely, they wanted to make sure that there was authentication.

The Bluetooth unit does not require a login in order to function from your device, nor do you have to have one to use it locally.

Then there is this.

quote:
Then Anova pushed an update to their app that requires you to pair your kitchen appliance with your facebook profile. I'm not kidding here. You need to link your facebook account in order to use your kitchen appliance. I mean, i'm looking at my blender and my pressure cooker and they seem to work fine without needing access to my social network.

This pertains to the bluetooth only model assuming the Amazon webpage is correct which is a breath taking leap.

I have had the Bluetooth/Wifi Anova for about a year. I now make the best steaks and roasts on the block......however, I'm the only house on the block.

Amazon runs them on special for about $120 every once and awhile.

Do you have to link to facebook or log in or any of that stuff?
