I just downloaded the app and it didn't make me log in

I doubt the unit requires you to control temp from the app, just monitor and adjust if you wanted to. Can be used just like the old style with the temp adj wheel

Hope someone that has one can answer better and more definitively

Thanks. Very helpful indeed.

I've never used the app with the Anova and haven't had the need to even experiment with it. It's got the controls built in to the unit so I fill my container with hot water (sometimes just a dutch oven) turn it on and set the temp, then just drop in the bag. I don't set a timer because if I want to eat at 5, sous vide for 2 hours sear for 2 mins or so, I just drop the bag in 2:45 and fly by the seat of my pants.

I love techie stuff but don't need to use an app or timer for something so simple. I like to keep my meats and poultry refrigerated so I really don't even know how I'd put my chicken breast in the pot before work and use the app to remotely fire things up because I can't figure out how to keep chicken refrigerated until cooking time if I'm not personally involved.

I just got the ANOVA Blue tooth and wireless one. Got that model not because I thought I'd ever use the wifi stuff, but because it was 900w vs 800w. Figured the extra 100w might come in handy for larger meals.

I had great success on my first attempt using the machine.

Tried chicken last night. Fail. I used the charcoal grill instead of the gas, spaced out for a bit and my coals got too cool for a fast sear. The thin part of the breast got dry, thick part was still good. I will stick to gas for finishing from now on. Hard to keep temp super high on my little Smokey Joe.

Yes, there was that update that required you to create a login, which was then modified to only require it on the WIFI unit if you want to control it remotely. There has never required that unnamed "social media" network login - if it did, I'd dump it.

Again, all the controls can be used directly from the device.

I think we’ll go with the Anova 800 watt unit. $100 and Amazon will have it here Sunday.

Thanks for all the inputs and experience.

I haven't had the chance to try mine out yet, but from what I've read it's perfect for shrimp and lobster... and just add your butter and herbs to the pouch.

I cooked a steak with the bluetooth Anova unit tonight. I don't know if I let it sit on the sear too long or if my cook temp was a bit too high, but it came out closer to medium than medium-rare.

Still delicious though.

Would give it ZERO STARS if possible!

A customer review on the Amazon website.

I think they rolled it back. I've had the wifi anova since 2016.

Also, with the Anova, you can always put your settings in manually without a phone (and without logging on!).

The only thing I use the wifi for is to start shorter cooks while i'm at work (for example, cooking chicken for 2 hours instead of all day.)

I would suggest the Wifi over bluetooth because it's got a stronger heating element, which lets the water come up to temp faster. Not a deal breaker, but it's nice.

Chefsteps Joule is another known brand thats apparently not bad, but I don't know a lot about them. I think Monoprice.com makes a budget version as well.

Whatever way you choose, I suggest getting a cooler and cutting a hole in the top to insert the unit. You'll never have to worry about water evaporation, and if power goes out momentarily, the water will stay hot and at a safe temperature for quite a long time. It's also insulated so water will heat up faster.

Late to the discussion, but I have the Annova BT model. Only used the BT feature once though. Generally just set the temp on the unit and press start.

As for bigger meals, the 800w element is fine. Last Christmas I used it on a 20lb rib and it came out just fine. If I recall I let it go about 9 hours.

Those look pretty good alright.

There are endless recipes in books, online etc, some contradictory as to techniques, times, temperatures.

Are there any tried and true sources?

This forum makes me spend entirely too much money.

Just bought the Anova at Target (didn't see any trannies) about an hour ago, and have two filets running in it now. They price matched the Amazon deal at $99.

Here's a good resource

The Anova app has several recipes that will give time/temps

Hard boiled eggs. If you ever want perfect hard boiled eggs, sous vide is the way to go.

I've done pork tenderloin and corned beef successfully.

The corned beef takes 48 hours to cook! It does, however, come out nicely.

As with most meats, you'll need a method to brown the exterior afterwards. I bought the Searzall attachment for a propane torch - Amazon doesn't have them in stock right now. You can probably use any of the other torches for the small areas, or use a pan or grill for the larger surfaces.

Using a re-purposed cooler is popular, although I went with the 19-qt polycarbonate container and bought the reflective insulation sheets for it. If you're cooking smaller amounts, you should be able to get the Rubbermaid containers with a hinged lid that has a cut-out for the heating unit.

I opened the box, screwed it onto the side of a pot, and it took me about 5 seconds to figure out how it worked. Never touched the instructions, downloaded any apps, or anything else.

Ran the filets for about an hour at 130 degrees, seared them for a minute on each side in a cast iron skillet. Pink from edge to edge. Very moist and tinder. I approve.

Anova is probably the most popular and most affordable sous vide device. Every once in awhile you'll see a review crop up of it failing or, crapping out, it happens.

If you're considering a different brand or, what else is used, Joule is another popular consideration. Higher cost, some claim better accuracy.

A little thread drift here (sorry). I am hearing impaired. Big time! My hearing aids do such a crappy job of coupling to the telephone that I don't even bother to try anymore, unless it's a real emergency.

However, my recently acquired Ford Edge has a bluetooth system (Ford Sync) that couples to my iPhone and plays phone calls through the car's radio amplifier / speaker system. Using this, I can actually understand maybe 80% of what the other party is saying. If I can't accomplish my communication with email or text, I'll go outside and sit in the car for a phone call.
