I just got this in the mail today and similar has been all over TV and radio. Illinois democrats want another state income tax increase and this time a "soaking the rich" tax increase. Keep in mind that Illinois democrats recently upped the state income tax rate about 70% with ZERO commitment to cut and costs or slow any growth - zip, zero, NADA. Same with this one still nothing about bringing down spending. Talk about class warfare and the welfare breeders in Crook county could care less about how high income taxes go as long as they continue to be promised more benefits.

What people in Illinois fail to understand is that this kind of income tax increase will further force more high productive workers and small businesses to flee the state. Jacking up their income tax does Illinois no good when they move out of Illinois. Meanwhile welfare breeders continue to breed and Chicago's new mayor wants more illegals too. We have plans to eventually move to Tennessee and hopefully in the mean time the value of our home does not further plummet as real estate taxes continue to increase but I would not count on that. How far this once great state has fallen in a fairly short period of time. Now we have democrat governor and democrat super majority in both state houses. Reality is even with this income tax it will do virtually nothing to fix the states fiscal condition without some severe cuts in state spending which the democrats refuse to even consider. Kick that can down the road for someone else to worry about.

Anytime the democrats talk about "fair" or "common sense" guard your wallets and firearms.

I feel for you. Gotta fund that insolvent state pension plan. I am sure you know that TN has no state income tax, but sky high sales tax. You have a TN destination set at this point?

I believe Tennessee sales tax is less than where I live in Illinois now as it is about 10 percent around here but we also have state income tax and sky high property taxes. When I look at homes in Tennessee with similar value to what we have now the property taxes are about 15 percent of what we pay now. Getting away from severe winters and constant more gun control laws is another big factor as is living in a state that is fiscally sound and will probably remain red for a long time yet. We are looking at south east TN around Knoxville area including Maryville.

Funny how it says the money is to help fund schools. I mean who does not want to help the children? Only problem is none of that money will end up helping any kids. Just more cash to pay liberal administrators and faculty.

Are there any areas of TN that are inexpensive to live in, but safe?

We were wiped out financially by illnesses a few years ago, and can no longer afford the kind of place we would like. With WI now in the D column (my college room mate still lives there and expects taxes to skyrocket now), TN is our next best bet.

They can't possibly need it for the schools. I was living there when they initiated the Lottery and the proceeds from it funds the schools. (In case it's unclear, heavy sarcasm)
Escaped for the last time in 2006. Will NEVER move back.

Illinois is on of the only states where everyone pays the same level of income tax, no matter how much they make. This is fundamentally unfair.

Actually, I'm of the opinion that is actually the definition of "fair." Right now, everyone in Illinois pays 4.95 percent state income tax. That's "fair."

If you make $50k, you pay $2,500. Earn $1.2 million you pay $60,000. Everyone gets the same services.

Notice how the left and the lefty opinion writers claim the rich are paying less as a percentage? How do they create that theme? The bastards screwed with the numbers and combined state and local tax payments. Liars ... all of them. I have no idea how they manipulated it, but I know they did.

And they have the guts to call this a "fair tax?" No, that's not right at all.

I find their "cultural appropriation" of the true "Fair Tax Legislation" as extremely offensive. A true fair tax would tax everything and everybody at the exact same percentage rate.

"The wealthiest pay about 7%."

"Middle-class families pay about 13%"

Says whom? The Illinois Economic Policy Institute and Project for Middle Class Renewal? Why should I believe anything they say?

"Illinois is one of the only states where everyone pays the same level of income tax no matter how much they make."

What does "level" mean? Is it the same as percent? How does this jive with the 13% vs. 7% claim they make?

The wealthiest families need to take a hike OUT of Illinois. Who is going to fund your shit then, Illinois?

Yes. Plenty. Just rural. Of course there are meth heads scattered about and the opoid crisis is pretty bad in Appalachia. Lived in East Tennesse for four years. Crossville is a nice community for retired folks.

Rural is good. I'll check the places you mentioned, east TN and Crossville. Thanks.

FYI
Tn State Income tax applies only to unearned income, (interest and dividend etc) not wages, but it is being phased out, lowered each year . It was 3% for 2018. Beginning January 1, 2021 it will be zero.

TN State Sales tax is 7%, adding the local sales tax brings it to a state wide average of about 9.5%.

Don't give up on Wisconsin so quickly. One limp Governor does not a "D" state make.

Come help us get out the vote.

I enjoyed the two years I lived in rural Wisconsin. That was a long time ago, and the taxes were high then. Winters were brutal but beautiful. Lots of services but you paid for it. I prefer a warmer climate with lower taxes. There was a tolerance there for differences.

Yeah the progressives seem to believe in percentages and not actual dollars. A family earning $50,000 a year pays approx $2500 a year in state income taxes while a family earning $250,000 a year pays approx $12,500 but the family paying $2500 is getting screwed by the current tax system. Roll Eyes

But you ask the 97 percent that won't be faced with a tax increase and most will be fine with it. What will they think when the day comes that the welfare breeders want those making more then them to be much more heavily taxed too? Cool huh?

Sorry to hear about your situation and best of luck to you.

You can search by town and zip code for safety ratings and other factors of places you may be interested in such as home prices, cost of living, amenities/shopping, healthcare, schools.

Of course real estate sites like Zillow make it easy to look at real estate for sale including taxes throughout the country and you can use resources like Google maps to look for are amenities.

I agree with the dems that this inequality needs to stop. We must get the middle class down to 7 percent to make things “fair”.

Move.

If enough middle- and upper-income people leave, eventually the problem self-corrects.

The faster enough middle- and upper-income people leave the sooner the problem self-corrects.

If it happens quickly enough, the problem may take other states out too.

If, however, leaving is not your first, last, and only option, kvetch all you want, but the needed fiscal disaster will never materialize, save for the one appearing in your personal finances.

A while back Boeing moved their HQ from Seattle to Chicago. Now Seattle has its issues also, but I was shocked they picked Chicago. I wonder how they're liking that choice now?

They should probably move again, and not back to Chicago. They now gave a big facility in Charleston. That would probably work.
