or getting sick?

I've eaten 2-year expired SPAM before without problem. But I hit a new record at dinner yesterday with a 10-year expired pre-cooked vacuum packed quinoa-brown rice. This is the kind that you put in the microwave for 90 seconds then eat. There was zero hint of it being spoiled, and I'm still typing with both index fingers................................. Razz

What is your eaten expired food story?

Back in 93 I was aboard Cutter Metompkin and our former USN cook Davis used to order food thru the National Stock System.

Think cardboard that was stenciled “Beef, Grade C”. Anyway we got a large olive drab can of peanut butter that was from the Korean War. Just cut the top off, stirred the oil back into the pulp and made sandwiches. [sarc] he was a great cook[/sarc]

I've eaten 5 year old vacuum sealed venison, no problem. In fact, there's still some in the freezer. Gotta be 6 or 7 years old now. Some salmon fillets too.

Not on purpose, but my sister served us some yummy chocolate syrup over a cheesecake a couple years ago. It tasted....... strange.

Went in the kitchen and found THIS on the counter!!! Well, not that exact can, but same vintage, with a can opener next to it to pop a hole in the lid.

Ask me this weekend Big Grin

About 4 to 6 weeks before COVID became a shitshow with runs on grocery stores, I went and stocked up on canned goods at Costco and HEB - canned chicken, tuna, green beans, corn, refried beans, black beans, fruit cocktail. All of the expiration dates were between 2021 and 2023. Any dented can was discarded.

None of the remaining cans have bulges and every one smells fine when I open.

I just had a can of tuna last week that expired 14 months ago.
In the past, I've eaten jarred foods that were 2 years past date.

In '89 I found some 1947 C-Ration crackers somebody ratholed away. The can looked kind of rough, but the crackers were good to go- kind of like large Ritz crackers. If they killed me, nobody told me about it.

I was rummaging around in the cabinet last week for some olives and found a bunch of canned chicken from Sam’s Club that we bought for our trip to Alaska in ‘20. As you said as long as the cans aren’t bulging they are usually fine.

I was given the infamous MRE "Four Fingers of Death" hot dog meal in 1991 while at Basic or AIT and I think it was made around 1986.

I did not experience death, thankfully.

So you could have been dead this whole time and no one told you? That’s wrong.

I've eaten a can of two year past Bushes Baked Beans and it was perfectly fine. But one time, I found a flank steak I completely forgot about in the bottom of the freezer, two and half years frozen when it was supposed to be in there maybe 1-2 weeks. I thawed it and sliced it up for a stir fry and the taste was off and the texture terrible. We didn't get sick, but ended up throwing the dish away after a few bites.

I ate a ring ding at night watching TV in law school. The white cream looked green, I figured it was the reflection from the TV so I kept going. Then I ate the other and something was off. Bad flavor like paint or rubbing alcohol. It was expired by about 8 years if I recall. So yeah that was it.
