People need to be pulled over for any traffic offense an officer cares to pursue. That would help reduce the shit bag behavior rampant on the roads. Today a pickup wanted out of a parking lot but just a few car lengths from a traffic light. He proceeds across both driving lanes, the left tun lane, across two opposite lanes, through a corner parking lot, across two more traffic lanes to make the left and off on his merry jackass way. Not likely his first offense and now won't be his last. Throw the book at these people! He drove across seven traffic lanes and a corner lot for his convenience of not sitting at the light in the left turn lane he blew across.

wait, I thought they already couldn't search drivers who are pulled over for minor violations unless they get consent.

To be honest, I really don't feel like being searched if I have a burned out tail light. This shouldn't even be an option.

what am I missing?

I think the question is posed to you to gauge your reaction. I can only remember once that a LEO,actually searched my car, I was 19 and was a longhair back, the early 1970’s.

Last time, 1976. Michigan plates, 85/55 traffic stop by the New Mexico State Police outside of Santa Rosa. He asked the usual questions, “drugs, weapons, open alcohol in the car” and after I answered no he said “Do you mind if I check?”

I said “Go ahead, where do you want me to stand while you go through it?” to which he replied “not necessary for me to look, you’re fine.”

I suspect if I had said no or got nervous he’d have went through it after seating me in the back seat of his car.

Are you sure about that? I thought they were caught while sleeping in the car at an I70 or I270 rest stop near Frederick.
