Yeah, their policy of not arresting people with traffic violations is working splendidly. On an unrelated note. A chick in Brooklyn with 93 traffic violations and over $10k in fines just killed a mother and her two daughters leaving the son in critical condition. But I'm sure being even MORE deficient on traffic issues will result in better results.

I seem to remember that Oakland CA did this a few years ago, the reason was because politicians thought LE was pulling over what they deemed far too many blacks. I'll bet this is the motivation as well.

I've said it for many years- New York is no longer part of the United States.

I am aware we have quite a few members from New York state and my comment is not intended to insult or sleight them in any way. I'm certain many of these members, if not all, feel the way I do about the place.

It's a shame that NY has come to this, but it is the truth.

A lot of Deep Blue Shitholes want to do something like this. It is just that traffic stops can lead to much more. One of my officers stopped a guy whose car had a cracked front window. Guy has warrants (minor stuff) but he is also a convicted felon. So an inventory search of the vehicle reveals 7 MAC-10s and other similar guns in the trunk. The convicted felon is now a machinist. Guess what, all the guns have been converted to full auto. Case turned over to ATF and FBI who really run with it. Guy gives up everyone and every location that he did full auto converts for. FBI, ATF, Gang Task Force, and US Marshals, do a 3 day massive search and arrest which recovers almost all the converted guns and decimates the gang bangers so St. Louis had its lowest homicide rate in years. All because of a cracked windshield.

There was a guy working at an LGS that wanted to be LEO, finally he got on at local city.

He was back in the LGS as a LEO, and he told us that his training partner was an avid traffic stop guy, said he did everything he could to pull folks over just to see if he could get them to consent to a vehicle search.

Said that the guy looked for any minor reason to pull specific people in specific type cars because he almost always hit something. Burnt out tail light, burnt out tag light, whatever minor infraction was there...

That training passed on to the guy I know and three months later he was in the store bragging about how many stops he made etc. Personality changed big time once he made the force...

I'm sure several people here know that guy, he's in every force on the street.

Imagine that might have something to do with it, so instead of fixing the problem people, they just change the law, easier, simpler to do...

Fewer victims - runaways, kidnapped, trafficked, will be located, but, hey, a person of color wasn’t harassed.

Chicago/Cook County is looking at the same.
It’s probably going to happen here as well within the next few years.

My thoughts on it:
Good! Let me know what stops you want us to make, and what stops you don’t. SIGN YOUR FUCKING NAME TO IT! Then let us (The Police) do or don’t do whatever we can. Months after this goes into effect, SHUT THE FUCK UP AND OPEN WIDE! Because we’re going to jam it down your throat.
The unfortunate thing is- between the time the rules (laws, actually) are passed then repealed- when crime skyrockets, and innocent people get hurt, blame the people that put their name in this shit!

Yes. McVeigh was caught while driving without a license plate, which then lead to the trooper finding his unlicensed firearm and then they figured out who he was.

NY’s legislature and policies it promotes should cause it to be renamed an asylum for the criminally insane. I bet they won’t hold back on nailing speeders considering the revenue involved

I used to use ALL the traffic laws to stop cars so I could 1. Find drunks 2. Serve warrants.

Everyone understands DWIs and how drunks kill innocents so I didn’t catch grief on that but I used to get talked to by the sgt whenever I got a new one and he would hear me stopping cars all day long.

I had to explain to them that RayRay lied about where he lives, the address on his warrant is his grandmas house and he’s never ever lived there. But RayRay gets around town in a car, so I stop cars for stuff like tag lights being out, or broken brake lights, no seatbelt etc. run their names check warrants if they were good give em a warning ticket and send them on their way. I usually served about 10-15 warrants a month that way-much higher number then guys who went knocking on doors all month looking for Pookie.

That is EXACTLY how so many good officers make major busts. You do a traffic stop for any infraction, read the person’s behavior, let them go with a warning if that is the case, or investigate further if needed. The key is to be consistent. If you are going to pull someone over for a tail light out, you better be pulling lots of people over for tail lights out. It gives you the opportunity to legally interact with the driver who you may just let off with a warning 95% of the time, but sometimes it turns into something major. Sadly,in today’s times, the more traffic stops equates to more chances of being shot at by some idiot with a simple warrant.

Exactly! It doesn’t mean you are giving everyone a ticket. You are interacting with many people for investigatory reasons. Most get let go with a warning unless you are a hard ass.

Isn't this the state trying to tax everyone to death? Now they want to eliminate a revenue stream?

This really surprises me. I would have been less surprised if the law was to not issue tickets to minorities and illegals but double the fines on people making over $100K a year, triple if over $250/year.
