My wife and I have never used Uber. We have an App on our phones but never used it.
My wife and I were thinking of going to a resort for a weekend that has several breweries in the area (like a mini pub crawl) and I do not want to drive. I was thinking of using a cab however, than I thought of Uber because we have the app on our phones.
I know there is another service called Lyft also but again I have no clue.

Thanks

I think this video may be of some help. It’s easier than me trying to explain it. Uber is a great option and has always worked well for me.

Go to the app, punch in your destination and a driver will show up at your current location. You get details of drivers car and location as he drives to you. Billed through your credit card registered through the app.

Only thing to add is make sure you have a picture profile in the app. The driver needs to be able to recognize you if there is a group of people waiting for Ubers outside the bar / tasting room.

Another option is that if you're going to a resort they might have a brewery tour service where they load you up in van/bus and take you to several destinations. Never done it for beer, but I've done it in wine country.

It's easy.

Once you have the Uber app linked to a Credit Card everything can start as Uber automatically charges the card for you..

In the app, you type in where you want to go and your current location. The next selection will be what type of car you want. We go Uber x as its alittle nicer than basic uber. Sometimes you don't get a choice though.

Uber pings drivers in the area util one agrees to pick you up. Then the app will tell you how long it will take for the driver to get to you.

The driver does not know where he is taking you until they pick you up. This prevents drivers from cancelling your ride on the way. (I had a driver cancel me once as I wanted to go from Manhattan to EWR during rush hour. He sent me a text and cancelled the ride right after I told him my destination)

Uber picks you up and drops you off and that's it. The card is charged and then the app asks you to rate the driver and add a tip if you prefer.

When you want to go to the next location, just repeat the steps above.

Note: Uber may not go to all locations. We tried to get an Uber from the Tamp airport to my parents but they don't go there cause its too rural. Something to check before you go.

I've used Uber much time for what you're talking about or when visiting cities. NYC is the only place I would likely even think of using a cab these days and that's just because they are everywhere.

I've found Uber and Lyft to overall have cleaner cars and friendlier drivers then cabs.

Super easy to use which is the big advantage.

Funny you should mention Uber. It didn't work for me this morning.

I took my car to the shop about 5 miles away for a service and minor repair.

I could not get an Uber this morning. Absolutely none were available. Ended up calling a friend to give me a ride back home.

I like Uber, usually works great.

I like Uber because the cars, unlike taxi cabs (based on my past personal experiences with taxi cabs) is that the cars are really clean, no smells, not worn out ex-police cars taxi cabs, the drivers are clean and well presented, and you are requested by the app to give each ride a rating. Ratings are very important to Uber and the drivers.

Just download the app, link a credit card, put in your pickup location and destination, and select 1 of the 3 available car type services. Give the driver a good rating unless it sucked.

I really prefer Uber over a taxi cab.

Good luck to you.

In larger metro areas I'd usually check both. Sometimes there's a substantial difference in pricing, or you can get a nicer grade of car for the same price. Once you have used the apps a couple times it's super easy.

Thanks everyone.
My next question is, I live in a concealed carry state, if I use either car service in the state I live in what is the policy for carrying a firearm.
Obviously if I am going to a location that prohibits firearms you would not bring it with you in their car however if your final destination has no prohibition can I bring it?

Aside from what's already been posted, keep in mind that car-share (Uber, Lyft, etc) drivers are independent contractors. They have a right to pick-up and refuse whomever they want. There's a bunch of fine print regarding refusals however they can choose their schedule and they can choose who they provide the service to. As independents, it's up to the driver to maintain their vehicle, present it as a business or, as a lazy business opportunity.

The crux to this service is the ratings (stars) that are provided at the end of the service. You rate them and your experience, they rate you as a customer; accumulate enough bad ratings and you'll have difficulty getting picked up. Its a two-way street, drivers with too many bad ratings will get dropped from the service; you do not get to see what they rate you and vice versa. Some drivers are into conversation, some have music playing, some have snacks/treats, some are silent..some passengers are pigs, loud, some are chatty, always on their phone. In short, keep the experience professional and straight forward, light chat if the driver/passenger is receptive.

Don't even think of mentioning you have a gun on you, unless you're sure the driver is a gun guy. If he's an anti, you mention you're carrying and he complains to Uber or Lyft, your account will be suspended. I used to drive for both and always had a sidearm in my door pocket. I met plenty of cool gun people as customers. One recognized me at the range a year later and offered to let me try out some of his race guns. But Uber and Lyft are totally anti-gun companies and don't care what the local law says about it.

Works the exact same as a taxi only you don't have to make a call to the taxi company, you use an app instead. And instead of paying the taxi man cash, you are using a pre-entered credit card.

I do this also. Also in some less metro areas there will be Uber but no lyft, or there will be a lyft driver but no uber......

You can also order a ride hours or days in advance. I have an early morning flight on Thurs. and will order the ride the previous night to arrive at my house at 6am. Nothing worse than finding out the nearest ride is 30 min. out when you're on a tight schedule.

Concealed is concealed and no one need know. Keep it that way.

Uber and Lyft are basically the safe in terms of how they operate. Once you use the app a couple times, its becomes almost second nature. The suggestion of scheduling a ride in advance is also a great recommendation, especially when going to the airport. Though it might sound funny, I love Uber when working on one of my cars and needing to pick up parts at the auto parts store. In years gone by I'd have to try and beg a ride from a neighbor or friend. Smile

Thank you everyone.

My wife and I had planed a cruise later this year for our thirtieth anniversary. We know that is not going to happen so I was looking at alternative things to do.
We are DVC (Disney time share) members and I am looking at city's around Florida that have resorts we can use and that have Craft brewery's around them. I was thinking of this as a not to expensive alternative thing to do till cruising returns.
I figured if we were to do this over a weekend we would not want to drive to the different brewery's.

One other question does this work in other country's.
Whenever we sail into the Cayman islands we go to a craft brewery called Cay Brew and always take a cab from the port. Would this work in the Cayman's using an app based on the user being signed up in the US.

Uber and Lyft aren't in any of the islands that I know of. I believe only in U.S. and possibly Canada (but not sure on CAN).

I too was a "late bloomer" when I came to Uber. It was kinda weird for the first minute or two, but then it's just like a cab. I'm now a big fan.

We use Uber when we travel internationally and it has really been a help. Using local taxi's in a foreign country can be a serious hassle, cabbies ripping you off, refusing to take your fair if they don't want to head that way, issues with explaining where you want to go when there's a total language barrier. Uber eliminates all that. The driver knows exactly where you need to go, the fare is set before you even start off, by definition the driver is cool with the trip he accepted and you have a comfort level with your driver along with a certain amount of identification that you don't have with some random cabbie, all via the app.
