The company is JP Enterprises. I ordered two tungsten weights. Had they asked to change the shipping cost, I’d have canceled the order instead. There’s no way it cost $15 to ship a small envelope with 1 lb of merchandise inside.

I’ve sent another email protesting the change in shipping charges without my approval.

Have you tried calling them instead of relying on email? Its so easy for a company to ignore an email and that's even if they check their email. Just because you received the product doesn't mean you can't file a dispute with the credit card company.

I don't think it is acceptable to retroactively charge more without contacting you first and allowing you to cancel. But I can provide some insight into what's happening on this website.

Setting up shipping rates for online carts is a pain, but if you start by ensuring your shipping weights and dimensions are correctly entered and tie into live shipping rates from carriers, you (normally*) can eliminate customer pain points like this.

Instead, JP Enterprises is just providing estimated flat rates and reserving the right to adjust the fee.

Drop anything into their cart, they have a shipping policy that is "flexible" and the rates are "average estimates."

Priority Mail (Small orders at JP discretion) Minimum - $8
UPS Ground (Flat Rate ) - $15
UPS 3-Day (average estimate) - $40 (and so on...)

Some smaller companies just default to flat rates because it is easier. In this case, they went the "flat rate estimate" route.

At Grayguns, we did flat-rate shipping in the beginning. It was easier to charge a flat rate of $8 or whatever it was. We knew it was an average, but when you sent a set of springs out, customers expected better rates. They were right. So we documented the correct shipping weights and dimensions for every product, entered it into the system, and tied it into live carrier rates.

I estimate that shipping for your order would have been between $5 and $6 for USPS Ground Advantage. Priority Mail would be about $11. Not sure about UPS.

* If you want to experience a real pain point when it comes to shipping, try to figure out how to do live rates when a customer is ordering multiple of the same items that can stack within one another. A simple example would be selling and shipping red solo cups.

Evil exists. You can not negotiate with, bribe or placate evil. You're not going to be able to have it sit down with Dr. Phil for an anger management session either.

I get what you’re saying but I also regularly ship stuff that I’ve sold online. The cost to ship what I’ve received should have been about $4. Adding a few bucks for “handling” is fine.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m not going to charge back the amount. The gun community needs to stick together and support each other. However, I’m going to leave this thread up so that maybe JP Enterprises will see it and be better in the future.

It's great for sending small numbers of FAX's, up to three pages each.

Now what I need to find is a similar service for receiving incoming FAX's, at the same price (free!).
