Skins2881It's always seemed backwards to me. I don't want to change times around, but if you had to pick something I rather have earlier sunrise in the summer and later sunset in the winter. Makes zero sense to change clocks and even less sense to change it to worse sunrise/sunset times.

A better argument, in my view, is because standard time makes more sense.
The time zones are divided-up into approximately 15° of longitude each, with the approximate center of each being the point at which the sun is highest at 12 o'clock noon (aka: 12 o'clock p.m., 12:00 hours) using standard time.

This is actually the most rational way to approach the concept of "saving daylight."
If we were
really being rational in this day and age we'd do away with time zones altogether. There's really no rational reason to use them, anymore. With as closely as the entire world is connected in this age it would make more sense if we were all using UTC clock time.

OgieJust leave it one way or the other, although I would prefer DST since I almost never get up early anyway.

sigcrazy7People who simply say "
I like my daylight in the evening" are simply selfish. Why don't
you just go to work an hour earlier?
You'd rather have all the road construction get started right in the middle of the rush hour and extend into the evening rush hour. And you'd rather the kids stand at the bus stop on the dark. Just so that you can have an hour earlier in the evening without you having to go in earlier? I remember once trying to deliver some heavy construction equipment near a High School in late October. This was in eastern Washington. This was shortly after Congress had moved DST ending back to November. I was trying to get a semi around a corner that was packed with kids standing on it, in the pitch black dark, at 8:30 in the morning. A complete, dangerous shit-show. But hey, somebody got an extra hour of daylight in the evening somewhere.
It really is a stupid thing. And not having noon be when the sun is at the apex is also irrational. Moving clocks twice a year is especially asinine.

sigcrazy7DST, the societal equivalent of having a “time” prompt in your Autoexec.bat file.

NismoI thought we had a vote to do away with changing the time?

EponymDaylight Savings Time is a misnomer; not a microsecond of daylight is saved. It should be called Daylight Shifting Time. It's purpose has expired a long time ago.

Good. If they're going to change it at all, change it permanent standard time.

wcb6092Maybe some legislator will throw a provision into one of those massive omnibus budget bills. Pick a time and set it, never touch the issue again.

I could go to work
three hours earlier, and not a soul would complain. But once I start heading out three hours early each day, there will be hell to pay.

I agree.
As much as I like [selfishly] my "daylight in the evening," I think it makes better sense to stick with standard time and quit messing around with clocks and schedules.
I feel rough for the people who have to write software to deal with the DST craziness -- this country uses it, no others do... these states participate, those don't... some counties within a state elect one option or the other, counter to the rest... no danged way I'd want to have to manage all that.

Some ShotChanging the clocks is a sad reminder to me that our elected representatives don't give two shits about us.

Yeah, it does create challenges.
There
are time zone files software libraries use to translate between UTC and local time based on day-of-year and year (the DST shifts have been moved several times), but, it can
still be a PITA.

Yessir, I didn't mean the U.S. was the
only country to use DST; my statement was intended to be more generic -- "these vs those," so to say.
But I appreciate the clarification.

straightshooter1I have loved DST since I was a young kid, when I could stay out an extra hour playing ball.
Like some others, I hate it when it gets dark at 5 pm.
Maybe they'll finally do something about it-hopefully.
