Not unexpected. They used to be great but have been going downhill for the last decade or more, helped along by effin' NYS. I still hunt with my 870 pump 12 ga. that I bought in 1983.

I own two Remington firearms: A 700 PSS in .308 Win. and a 1911 R1 Enhanced in .45 ACP--my very first 1911.

My 700 PSS is a tack-driver and my 1911 R1 Enhanced was flawless right out of the box.

When I was in high school, I got a tour of the Ilion plant. It was pretty cool.

I was amazed even back then at how old the manufacturing equipment looked.

Sad it's gone.

That's what I was thinking, but the Huntsville plant was lost in bankruptcy.

I can't find anything that says the LaGrange plant has been built. There's an article from August of this year in the LaGrange Daily news that says the city has transferred 43 acres in an industrial park to RemArms and that RemArms has 39 months to build and get a Certificate of Occupancy or it has to pay for the land. The article is now behind a paywall for me.

Well, if their gone- in one respect, it's sad, because they were America's oldest extant manufacturer of firearms.

On the other hand, they had cheapened their rifles and shotguns and turned out some spectacularly shitty pistols, and they had long ago ceased being the company shooters respected, so, they've been out of business for some time.

I found an article from January of this year that says:

"RemArms employees in Ilion were told Wednesday, in the midst of contract negotiations, that the Centerfire 700 Model line will move to their LaGrange, Georgia, manufacturing facility, to maximize production opportunities by having all Centerfire Rifle Product lines in one location. All shotgun product lines will remain in New York."

So they do have a plant in LaGrange. It seems they plan to add more manufacturing capacity in the next few years.

Of greater concern than a loss of arms manufacturing in a Remington demise is yet another blow to the availability of ammunition to the American consumer. For generations Remington has produced ammunition for rifles, shotguns and pistols.

I would imagine, though, that the equipment and facilities which manufacture this ammunition would likely find ready buyers. Since I haven't researched the matter, for all I know, this ammunition is produced for Remington by someone else.

Remington ammunition in Lonoke, AR was purchased by Vista in 2020. That ammunition facility is absolutely operational. Thankfully.

^^ I recall that, but also think I saw that very recently Vista sold off all the ammo brands (CCI, Federal, Speer, ect) to the CZ group.

Yep. When the Remington Outdoors Company went bankrupt in 2020, its constituent parts were chopped up into separate companies that went to a number of different buyers. Remington Ammunition was bought by Vista. Marlin was bought by Ruger. H&R and AAC were bought by JJE Capital Holdings. Bushmaster was bought by Franklin Armory. Tapco was bought by Sportsmans Warehouse. And the remaining firearms portion of Remington was bought by Roundhill Group and became Remington Arms.

So despite the common name, "Remington Arms" and "Remington Ammunition" are no longer connected. Separate companies with separate owners, rather than divisions/subsidiaries of an umbrella "Remington" company like before. In fact, the Remington brand name went with the ammunition company to Vista, so Remington Arms actually had to license the use of it from Vista.

It's very good that the fate of Remington ammunition is no longer tied that of Remington Arms. The last thing American shooters need right now is one less manufacturer of ammmunition.

There are better articles out there I’m sure but Roundhill LLC bought the shotgun, rifle and pistol portion of the company after their breakup. From what could tell at the time they had absolutely zero connection to the firearms industry. I believe they are/were a real estate company. Not surprising at all to see the NY plant close. The final piece surely won’t be far behind if this follows the typical path when a venture capital or other unrelated outfit gets control. I just wish the bastards would have made some shims for my V3…which is a fantastic, soft shooting shotgun for me except the fit is a bit off and I shoot it slightly high. Great design though.

The Huntsville Headquarters was closed and liquidated a few years ago during the Courtright administrated split following the Sandy Hook law suit settlement. I’ve got a pretty nice two-tone Remington 1911 stamped HUNTSVILLE, AL. It’s a cool relic of a hometown firearm. Runs well too. The R51 boat anchors are a completely different story.

You might be able to make shims yourself with a 3D printer. I'm working on doing that for my Beretta A400. Used Tinkercad online to create a model of the current shim, and then adjusted it. I don't own a printer, but the local university my wife works at has them available and is going to print them for me. My parents local library also has 3D printers available for nominal charges.

My wife grew up there they only have a skeleton crew there in Ilion for the past 5 years. Moving everything down to Georgia where the firearms environment is more favorable. My Father-in-law worked there after WW2. I had an opportunity to tour the plant. It went on and on. I will see if I can get some photos to share. It’s kinda sad in a way for that area. Remington was such a huge part of life for the area. Now the buildings are just sitting there close to empty.
