It's not a power issue, it's a physics issue. The lift - for some reason - stopped and the weight of those on the lift reversed the normal direction and started to speed up due to momentum. The weight of the passengers pulling everyone down backwards.
For some reason, the cogs and brakes that should have locked the lift from spinning backwards on its own failed. Results in a rollback.
Evil exists. You can not negotiate with, bribe or placate evil. You're not going to be able to have it sit down with Dr. Phil for an anger management session either.

There is no emergency stop for a malfunction like that. I don't believe it's possible to even run ski lifts backwards. That likely was the result of a broken drive gear.

Not unlike the video of the ship anchor dropping and the momentum/weight overtaking the brake.
Once some things get going, the kinetic is nothing to be trifled with.
After the machine changes from horsepower to mulepower, best to get way back.
