Couple arrested in attempted stabbing of Raley’s employee after shoplifting attempt

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced on its Facebook page Wednesday afternoon the Dec. 30 arrests of two suspects who allegedly attempted to stab a Raley’s employee in Loomis after the employee tried to stop them from shoplifting.

The post said 23-year-old Elizabeth Almand and 25-year-old Brandon Smith were arrested by deputies after the pair attempted to stab the employee who tried to stop them from shoplifting.

Smith drew a knife on the employee when the confrontation got physical and he allegedly cut the employee’s finger, the sheriff’s office said. The two fought over the weapon, but Almand allegedly grabbed the knife and Smith yelled at her to stab the employee.

Deputies said a witness who was carrying a licensed concealed weapon ordered Almand to drop the knife, which she did.

Deputies said they discovered Almand and Smith shoplifted $50 worth of items. Both are charged with robbery and conspiracy, the sheriff’s office said. Smith is carrying an additional charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

The pair is being held at South Placer County Jail.

Good guy with a gun.... Smile

The right of self preservation, in turn, was understood as the right to defend oneself against attacks by lawless individuals, or, if absolutely necessary, to resist and throw off a tyrannical government.

yes, good guy with a gun. And nobody got shot!

One of these days I will have to do the innerweb search and find out how many such incidents have been solved/stopped by a good guy/gal with a gun.

Update (the Bee got it wrong, again). The injured party was a security guard. In CA, you can't contract directly with a guard - you have to contract with a Private Patrol Operator who furnishes the guard.

According to information on the KCRA site, the company says that the guard is doing OK.

Many instances of a good guy with a gun will never be known because they never got reported. The reason? Sometimes the incident took place in an area where it was illegal to have a gun; a gun that was carried there because the carrier had good cause to fear for their life but the local politicians did not think they should have that right.

Thanks for the update. I wonder why that particular store has gone to the expense of a security guard. It's in a decent neighborhood, decent areas to the west and million dollar lots/homes to the east. However, easy freeway access may bring the losers.

when I was in the business, the last company I worked for told us we could not intercept, or manhandle a shoplifter,
certian steps had to be followed etc etc,

not that I paid much attention to that, but anyway

we had security in each store, regardless of demographic,
they were basically powerless, as far as stopping, but were actually called engagement officers,
they were to talk to everyone, esp those that may be stealing, and alert us (management) if someone was,

A local station interviewed the guy who intervened. While he did appear on camera, they only used his first name. Appears to have had his CCW for about 25 years, and this was the first time he has had to make use of it.
