It sounds like a VFR Interceptor right until around 7,000 rpm. It looks nice, but the 916 still floats my boat.

I love my XR. Fast, stable and all the electronic goodies work seamlessly. Its upright riding position makes it comfortable for longer rides. The clutchless shift assist is great. Excellent whoa with big Brembos. It was a fully loaded demo with 350 miles on it so it was sold to me as a full warranty used bike. 13K out the door. I couldn't pass it up. Only complaints are BMW dealer service costs and its anemic "symmetrical" headlights caused me to spend $$$ for Clearwater lights. I picked it up in St. Ignace and rode out US2 to M77. Once I hit the Seney Stretch I turned it on and did 110+ all the way west down the Stretch. I don't ride this way very much, but the XR begs for it.
There are YT videos of people mounting knobbies and riding them in the dirt. Not for me, but the XR really is a "do everything" bike.

I've been looking at this bike since I did the BMW test ride a few weeks ago. Unfortunately I didn't get to try the XR but I'm hoping to when the spring rolls around. Maybe by then, I'll have talked the boss into letting me snag one Wink

A neighbor lives across the complex from me and its quite a distance away. He has a Duck and when he fires it up, that distinctive sound is unmistakable.
I cant help but wonder what H-Ds buying Ducati will mean for the brand.

My first thought also, sure does sound like my old VFR750. I love those V4 sounds, like a mini Ferrari Big Grin.

Sadly, way too expensive for me to consider. I will still be looking for a mid to late 80s VFR.

Ducati has always been more on the expensive side but the top trim Japanese bikes are closing the price gap.

The R1M is a top tier model with full ohlins and forged wheels. So you aren’t comparing apples to apples. That would be the Ducati 1299S, which is $25k. Still 3K more either way, and you can deal on a Japanese bike, good luck on the Ducati price, you’ll need it. Best my local Duck owner has ever offered me is 25k OTD on the S. I’ve bought almost ten new sportbikes thus far, and know 3 different GM’s. Pretty well versed on the price gap. I also do not think this thing will sell for what the 1299 does.

13k is a killer deal on a new XR with only 350 miles on the clock, that's almost 7 grand off list price. I've been looking for a second bike to complement my K16GTL and have taken the XR out twice for a test ride. My only complaint with the XR is its to tall, I like to be able to flat foot the bike comfortably which I can't do on the XR. I have a line on a 2016 XR that's never been title and has about 300 miles on the clock. The dealer offered it to me for 15500 and I almost bit.

Kawasaki is coming out with a super charged 200 hp sport tourer in 2018 so I may wait a while and get the Kawasaki. I'm looking for light, fast, comfortable with factory bags so I can take it on overnight trips.

Anyone on here played with an Aprilia RSV4 RR or RF? Kind of off topic, but I'm thinking an RR would be a kickass bike for the money (used ~8k with low miles). Either that or an S1000RR will be the next liter bike...

Also, TKO, your wife has some street cred with that 959 Panigale. Right color, too.

If I were comparing an R1M to a Ducati counterpart Id be more inclined to go with an 1199R. That makes the price gap even wider still. I had found 1 that had <1k miles on it and had the "rest" of the work done on it (CF goodies mostly, clear cover, etc) that the dealer took back in on trade and was selling for 27k. I almost pulled the trigger.

Thanks Killer! Ive been riding hers while mine has been in for maintenance for a few days. 3 years back I let the forum choos my next bike, and they voted BMW.

Checkout www.apriliaforum.com for all you want to know about the RSV4. I've read good things about the Aprilia but they have a few quirks. I test rode a couple S1000RR's but can't get use to the cramped riding position.

The Ape is sick. The motor is absolutely fantastic. If I was buying anything on the market today that would be it. Great chassis but the motor is long term ownership stuff.

The XR has the same motor as the RR but "detuned" to 160HP from the RRs 190. I cant even imagine riding the RR.
The XR has a chip that you can install into a socket under the seat. Once it is installed, BMW no longer authorizes the bike for street use. Needless to say, the chip is locked in my safe and there it will remain.
Calugo:
I am 6/4 so I can flat foot it. The bag mount system on the XR is great, but BMW hard luggage for it costs an arm and a leg! I have looked at other bag systems but cant make up my mind as to which one to go with.

My RR is the most fun Ive ever had on a bike. I cant imagine riding anything else after owning it.

It looks like Ducati REALLY did their homework with this new bike. A Panigale V4 with Racing slicks and a Akra exhaust just put down a lap at Valencia that is only 5 seconds behind the MotoGP lap record.

This thing is putting down more power at the wheel (203hp) in stock form than a 2017 GSX-R1000 or S1000RR that has a race exhaust, intake and a really good tune.

This is one instance where I'm really glad I'm as old as I am. My "superbike" was one of just a very very few full race Dunstall Nortons imported into the States in '71. Well under 400 lbs wet and somewhere close to 70 bhp. That was plenty fast for me back in those days. I simply can't imagine running today's monster bikes as carefree as we did with the hotrodded cafe racers back in my day. The thought simply scares the hell out of me.

I quit riding bikes over a decade ago....
