I tend to let my truck run for a minute or two before placing it in gear and taking off.

Mrs. Angus on the other hand, places her car in gear and takes off before the engine can completely turn over.

Does it matter? What say you?

I'll start the car, change glasses, fasten my seat belt and then I'm off driving mildly until the car warms up.

It depends. How cold is it outside? Turbo charged or not?

Longer if it's cold outside, but generally 1-2 mins in non-freezing temps.

On our Jeep, I let the RPMs come down. Usually takes about 20s.

The BMW manual says start it and go.

Bart: Alright, we'll settle this like men, with our fists.
Hedley Lamarr: Sorry, I just remembered . . . I am armed.

My car(s) are turbocharged Volvos....I wait until it idles down (600-900 RPM depending on how warm/cold it is) prior to 'taking off'.

Vehicles usually go to a High Idle when cold started, even if it's 95 degrees out.

I let it run for 30 seconds or so, until the Tachometer shows the idle dropping down to close to normal idle speed. Then I go.

To me, when a vehicle is at 1300-1400 RPM level, it just seems to me that slapping it into gear is hard on the U-Joints/CV Joints, other driveline components, motor mounts, transmission, etc, so I take it easy.

Then I drive it slow and easy until the temp gauge shows normal operating temperature.

Then it's time to let the horses run.

I start mine remotely & make my second cuppa joe, brush my teeth, & head out the door. Probably 4-5 minutes in the morning.

Start and go. If it's iced over I start it, scrape the ice off, and then go.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

I wait for all of the dash lights to go off and the idle speed to come down. Probably a minute or so.

Start and go no matter the weather. Only reason I feel the need to let run longer in cold weather is for the heater to get warm quicker, or if I was going straight onto an interstate. Driving at a top speed of 40-45 doesn't bother me on a cold engine.

Don't know if I drove that day, but it was -28 with a -55 wind chill in Wisconsin last year. I know I drove at -22.

zero warn up. Start, put my seatbelt on, put it in gear and drive. In winter, I try to drive slowly with gentle acceleration for 1/2 mile or so. Engines warm up faster under load. I feel unless you live in a very cold climate, idling for warming is just a waste of gas.

I let it idle for at least 10 or 15 seconds when it's warm out (about a minute if it's freezing cold out), then start driving gently (no hard acceleration) until at least the coolant reaches operating temperature.
