On Tuesday night my son called on his way home from work. Check engine light came on with a code. Sounds like the engine is shot. There is a recall for this issue and Hyundai is putting in new engines under warranty. I am waiting to see if they cover it, I do have an in who is trying to push through the warranty (2013).

Last night around 11:00, I received a call from the police in Chapel Hill NC. There was a domestic dispute in my daughters apartment complex and a car ran into her parked car (2015 Hyundai) and pushed it into another vehicle. She is a grad student at UNC. Looks like her car will be totaled.
She needs to have it towed to a body shop for a decision on having it fixed or totaled.
At least insurance will cover it, $500 deductible collision if the other person doesn't have insurance.

Any recommendations on a body shop in Carrboro or Chapel Hill would be appreciated.

So today I got the call from the dealership.
2013 has a new engine, no charge. I think it helped that a teacher in my school used to work there and got it pushed through.
2015 was totaled and the payout was 11K. It was in good shape up to that point and had low miles.

Now I'm looking for a new car for my daughter.

Hope they cover the engine for you, that would be good since there is a recall on the vehicle, sucks about your daughters car, and if the other person has insurance get it fixed up..

File with your insurance carrier as well. The two different companies may have a different value on your daughter's car if it is totaled.

That way, if your carrier is giving a higher value, go through your carrier & pay the ded. They will subrogate the other insurer to the amount and you will get your deductible back.

A friend of mine had a Kia that had the engine die. She called me one day and said the engine was making some weird noises. I stopped by her house and started it up. You could hear it right away. While it ran something was hitting something inside the engine.

They replaced the engine but it was a fight and she was out of a car for about three months.

Good luck I hope they cover it.

My insurance carrier asked for my bank routing numbers so they can make a direct deposit if it is totaled.

The school that my wife works in has an auto shop class. The teacher that runs the class had just left working for Hyundai as a manager. He contacted his old manger who is hopefully getting it to go the warranty route.

Depending on the amount they quote, be sure to look at filing a Diminished Value claim in the event that they go the repair route. Your daughters car was worth more with no reports of damage on it, with the claim it will be forever red tagged on all databases such as CarFax and it's value less because of the accident.

I'd be wary of giving my routing number prior to knowing what the payout is.

I had a truck stolen several years ago and the insurance gave me a low value for replacement. I took photo's of it and the camper I used with it showing condition and they greatly increased my replacement value.

Best of luck.

Cheers~

There’s a huge class action settlement for Kia/Hyundai engines. Oil consumption issues in a short time were causing them to fail or seize up prematurely. Google it, it’s not hard to find the info. It’s why we ditched my wife’s Sorento.
